I am deploying a broadband internet billing system for a small hotel, whereby I need to create every port of my 3COM switch as a 802.1Q tag-based VLAN and map the ports going to every room in the gateway billing device.

My question is, when I create every port a separate VLAN how can the clients get the DHCP broadcast? Where should I connect the DHCP server?

I am very new to VLAN concept, so need your help please

It a setup such as you have...I'd lean towards taking the port based VLAN approach instead....each port on the managed switch is its own VLAN. If your switch is doing DHCP...it will broadcast to each port. If you have a router that runs the DHCP service...the port that you link it into the switch should be a member of each VLAN also. Same if you want to give them internet access. If you have a server that runs DHCP for the network..whatever port it links to the switch to will also be a member of each VLAN.

Thanks for your reply, but the managed switch SNMP is not supported by my billing gateway, please click and refer to this for more info:

If your running multiple VLANs on the switch you will need a different subnet for each vlan, a DHCP server that can serve all VLANs and a device to handle inter-vlan routing.
