  When I restart I'm getting "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. TheWindow registry or SISTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try unistalling the associated application using it's unistalled or setup program. If you still want to use application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
vnetsup.vxd
Press a key to continue.
After pressing key to continue I get same message for : vredir.vxd
dfx.vxd...
Windows starts loading I then I get a window:
Windows Networking
Unable to load dynamic link library:
msnp32.dll
The system cannot find the file specified. Some or all of the following features is not available.
Microsoft Network.
This happens after I had to reformat and reload Win98SE. On my desktop I deleted the Online and the MSN icons.

Seems like it looking for a modem or NIC device, not certain though. Never had that happen, and I delete the same folders too. Try running this program (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=18924) and see if it helps.

AliBaba, Had the same problem a few weeks ago. Had to remove client for microsoft networks then remove the nic from control panel, then refresh and let it install the nic again. Then go back and install client for ms network. Had to do it like two or three times before it would work, but it did, finally!

Right cliclk on "network neighborhood" icon on the desktop, then select properties. Teh window that appears hat a list of all the network adapters and clients. To remove your NIC and or Client for microsoft networks, click it once, then click remove. Windows will ask to reboot after each removal, just wait 'till you're all done removing things to reboot. On restart, windows will re-detect and install your NIC and Client.

If no one comes up with a better and if there is no reference in either sytem.ini or win.ini, backup your registry. Then do a search for for each reference of the file (msnp32.dll) in the registry and delete it.
As it refers to networking, you should be able to reboot and replace the backed up registry if there are problems.
