Making My Signal Stronger

I live next door to my friend, whom has wireless internet broadcasted around his property. i can acess it 3m away from my room, but inside my room, i only get a incredibly weak unreliable signal. my friend doesnt wish to, and i dont want him to, change anything on his side of the equation, but i would like to increase my signal strength. i have researched cantennas, but it seems that some soldering is required, as well as opening up my laptop, none which are desirable to me. my request is a method to increase my signal strength, on a budget (as in within $10US) without any soldering etc etc.

possibly a usb cantenna??? placing an antenna near my laptop???? aluminium foil???

Assuming you have full permission here....and he's aware of rules from his ISP....you can take those home made approaches..or off the shelf products such as this...
