I’m paying for a lovely fast ISP connection (24Mbps, bethere.co.uk)…. but I can only achieve 5.9Mbps download via my main laptop using the wireless network.
Using my second laptop, I can achieve a download speed of 15Mbps via ethernet and 13Mbps via wireless. On my main laptop I also get 15Mbps over ethernet, but it’s limited performance over wireless is driving me mad.
- I use Win XP Professional, Service Pack 2
- I’m using a US Robotics PCMCIA Card
- I’m using bethere’s ADSL router
- I'm set up next to the router, so am getting 100% signal
- I'm definitely on 802.11g not 802.11b
- I tried an alternative USR PCMCIA Card (ie the one from the second laptop), but no difference (5.9 Mbps).
- I even bought a new USB Belkin card and get exactly the same download speed 5.9Mbps (all cards give me 13Mbps on 2nd laptop but 5.9Mbps on main laptop)
- no other devices are connected to the wireless network
- the above remains pretty much true whether I broadcast the (unique) SSID or not and have WEP security turned on or off
- I have cleaned the registries, run the virus software, turned off zonealarm and firewalls etc etc but still no different. I have deleted what I thought might be conflicting drivers and removed redundant software.
Something about this laptop (faster spec than laptop no. 2, 1GB RAM etc etc) is not letting me get up to the 13Mbps I get on my second laptop! I’m not particularly technical, but can follow instructions, even if they move into cmd lines and IPCONFIG etc, so any ideas anyone?
