Hi,

I'm new here and new to networking, so I'm hoping the solution to my problem is common and simple! Here's hoping anyway...

I have a home wireless network setup. I have a wireless ADSL router providing a broadband internet connection. I also have a music server which I've connected an ethernet wireless bridge to, in order to control it from my PC. I have the bridge set up to connect to an access point (my router), and have my PC, the bridge, and the music server set to automatically be assigned IP addresses.

But the issue is that when the bridge is connected and I have access to the music server, I do not have an internet connection on my PC. The PC can still communicate with the wireless network (everything pings etc), but just no internet connection. When I disable the bridge, the internet connection magically reappears.

What might be the cause of this and how do I fix it? I've spend many hours trying to fix it but nothing seems to work. I have had it working correctly in the past, but a recent power disconnection to the bridge seemed to "reset" things.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Surely someone can help me?

Some routers have VLAN capability, so wireless clients are not visible to each other while online, make sure it's not set that way.

It is hard to judge without exact models of the router/bridge, and settings used.

I'd just go over the settings on the router/bridge again. Do the clients have private IP addresses in the same block ? Is the router always pingable ? How about external IP addresses ? etc.

Thanks for the help Philip.

I managed to get everything up and running again, but the problems returned...

I had internet operating at the same time as being able to communicate with the bridge, and the whole network seemed fine. And without explanation, my PC came up with an IP conflict error, and it could not communicate with anything on the network (ADSL router or ethernet bridge). [no new equipment was connected to the network].

After manually setting an IP on my PC, changing it back to automatic assignment of IP, manually setting it again, an finally chaning it back to automatic, everything is working again.

What is happening? This is really doing my head in now...

Some AP-Bridges have dhcp servers just like a router. Yours may have a dhcp server, check its control panel & disable dhcp. And while your at it, if using a bridge the give it a static lan ip address so the router does not have to continually manage the bridge's addressing. Desktops do best w/ a static ip as well. Static ips prevent dhcp address conflicts.
