I've been on a home wireless network for the past 2-3 months without a problem. Using the Linksys USB G adapter and a Linksys WRT45G router, I used the "easy setup" option and connected with no issues. I used the linksys monitor over Windows WZC.

I just upgraded my CPU yesterday and reformatted my PC to accept the major hardware change. After loading WinXP SP1, I tried to install the USB adapter and connect to the network. While I was successful in connecting to the SSID, I get an unresolved IP address 0.0.0.0 . I know this is a typical symptom of many wireless problems, but I have tried everything in my knowledge to get an IP address. I have uninstalled the monitor and tried to use WZC with the same results. I've tried assigning the DNS with no luck. I've tried with and without WEP security. Also re-arranged the antennae even though i get 'strong' signal and have been previously connected from the same location.

The only thing I can think of is that I don't have all the patches, updates, and SP 2 for Windows (in which I believe WPA is one of the patches). Has this been my problem all along? I'm currently at work and will grab an ethernet cable to bring home -- just wanted to know if this could be the culprit for no IP address.

Service Pack 2, on top of MANY security fixes, greatly improves the Wireless Config utility, as well as compatiblity with lots of wireless gear.

Yes...on any rebuild of a PC..should be one of the first things you install..SP2.

It didn't occur to me until I had read your tips thread, which prompted my question. My disc is SP1, and I was in the direction of getting the service packs, but the connection problem has kept me from getting to them.

Thanks again. Guess I'll give it the ol' college hardwire try.
