I am temporarily in FL using a Comcast cable internet connection. Using internetfrog.com to check download/upload speeds, I get the following results: (Modem is a Motorola SB5120)

Connecting wirelessly through a WRT54G Linksys router (WPA security, Firmware Version: v3.01.3 - HyperWRT 2.0) - 2132/435

Connecting wired through the same router - 7130/425

Is the big discrepancy normal or ????

No it's not normal...I remember benching my wireless before the PowerBoost came in..I'd hit 6200 through ethernet, 6200 through wireless. At that time...wrt-54g v1 with DD-WRT. Using WPA. Router downstairs, laptop upstairs 3x rooms over.

Try different channels
Is your SSID unique?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, my SSID is unique and I have changed channels to avoid conflict (netstumbler). Tried channels 1 and 11. No significant difference. My router was moved to within 3 feet of the computer for the test.

Any suggestions??

Updated wireless NIC drivers?
If you have a wireless NIC that supports any proprietary speedboosting features..disable it those features.
My wrt54 is an old version 1...I know the version 5's were very crippled, horsepower wise.

I have a 1 1/2 yr old Toshiba using an Intel pro wireless 2915 ABG Network connection. On your suggestion I updated the driver from v 9.0.1.9 to v.9.0.4.26 which made no difference at all.
I don't use Toshiba wireless software, relying on Windows to handle that.
btw, my Linksys WRT54G is v3.

I called the tech desk at the store where I bought the computer and he claims that wireless wouldn't run at more than about 1/2 the wired speed!!!!
Again I am getting over 7 Mbps wired and about 2.1 wireless (internetfrog.com) The spread seems too much for this layman.

Would a change in router software help? I am using HyperWRT 2.0
Or what about changing some of the default settings in that software?

I ran the Speedguide tcp optimizer. It made no difference to the speed when connected by cat5, but significantly increased my d/l speed when connected wirelessly.
D/L on cat5 7130, wireless 6200. Uploads were the same.

I am pleased with the results.
