View Full Version : Ping/Latency Problem

Facist333

Ok...so recently my pings on the game Counter-Strike:Source have been averaging 50-150 in the server menu but while in the lowest pinged servers that were showing my ping in game was very jumpy and averaged between 120-500. You may think this might be a problem with the game but I have been having tremendous lag on Xbox Live as well. I've reinstalled, scanned, and done everything I could think of to try and fix this problem. I'm willing to try anything so please feel free to help :rotfl:

Thanks

If your Xbox is also seeing jumpy ping times, the problem may not be at your end.

Do a tracert to the game server and check for possible irregular ping times along the signal route.

Relocate your modem a few feet away from other electrical devices until your tracert shows 3 similar ping times in the first hop.

The driver for your cable modem is available at this link:

These drivers would still work even though I plug my up modem up to my pc via ethernet cord, because most of the drivers are "USB" drivers..?

I suggest you call your ISP and complain to them that their cable modem is defective so that they can give you a new one. You can show them your tracerts and the ping times at hop 1 to justify the switch.

Recently the company I was getting my internet and cable tv was "bought" or whatever you wanna call it and is now a new company so we now have internet and cable tv with this new company. My point is I'm worried that since our Modem came with the internet when we were with the company they bought that they would say its not their problem because they didn't sell/give us the modem. Also, would it make a difference if I just went to Wal-Mart and bought one?

I think you meant your ISP was taken over by another company. I am sure the new company is still honoring the contracts made by the target company of the takeover or else they will be losing customers by the drove.

As this is a cable modem and not DSL, it may be trickier to just buy off the shelf and hope it is compatible with your ISP's system. Besides, your new ISP may already be upgrading their system and they would be the best party to know what new range of cable modems will be suitable for this system.

Ok I know I'm bringing up an old post but some of my problems haven't been resolved. I contacted my internet provider and they gave me a new modem which fixed my computer problems. On my XBOX 360 I'm getting lag that I don't think I should get (aka I have a better connection than my friends but they still get less lag) I'll try to give you as much information as I can right now.

There is only one cable coming out of the modem. It is usually connected to the cmputer. When you connect your XBOX to the modem, do you disconnect your computer and connect this cable to your XBOX?

No. The tweaks are to improve your computer speed.

My computer speed is being fine yet on my Xbox they are not

*Yeah I just disconnect the ethernet connecting my computer to my modem and connect the one from my xbox to my modem.

From the link you gave me:

Set Up Your Connection

When you're ready to set up your connection, remember the following for Charter:

* A PC may be required to activiate your high-speed Internet service.

When the internet guy came to give me a modem he had to have it called in so it would work with my computer..would he have to do this with my xbox as well?

Try turning off power to your modem for a few minutes before connecting your XBOX to it. Thus will reset your modem and eliminate any accumulated errors in it. The XBOX will then automatically establish a synchronised link with your modem. No settings on the modem is required.

Didn't do the trick :( btw, I heard somewhere you could check your packets and latency somewhere in the xbox dashboard if anyone who views this that knows how can you tell me??
