Hello all - I'm trying to figure out what's causing this problem because it's driving me crazy and nobody at Comcast can tell me what's going on. Anyway, let me explain:

I recently moved into a new apartment and had Comcast install broadband internet with a wireless gateway/router. The original router they installed was a Linksys; however, I recently had them replace it with their other wireless router brand of choice - Netgear - to see if that would make a difference... it didn't. Basically, if I try to download anything or access a website that has a lot of content to download (i.e. ESPN.com), the router will quickly malfunction and the "cable" light will blink disconnecting me from the internet. The only way to fix them problem is to turn off my wireless modem in my computer, unplug the router, and then turn everything back on. The computer that has been causing all of the trouble is an IBM Thinkpad R51 running Windows XP Professional.

The catch is that I also own a MacBook, and I have never experienced this problem when downloading information wirelessly through the Mac. Therefore, I'm assuming that the problem has to do with my Windows machine.

I'm not sure what other information anyone may need to assist with this problem, but I'd be more than glad to share anything I can. I would suggest a virus, but my roommate (who has the same Thinkpad) experiences the same problem. Is there any kind of software or setting in Windows that could cause this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jon

PS: I should add that this problem does not happen when I plug my Thinkpad into the router with an ethernet cable.

Most likely it's the wireless chipset in your notebook and most likely it's an Intel chipset, which have a number of issues. If it is an Intel chipset then download the latest drivers from here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=11342&lang=eng). Then uninstall the entire Intel Wireless Proset software and reboot, then install just the latest drivers that you just downloaded and use the built in wireless client that Windows XP has.

:D IMVHO it is wifi authentication problem
see details in ThP 'Access Connections'

BTW in ThP for management of ALL (also the Internet) connections
'ThinkVantage Access Connections'
is strongly recomended (much better than build in wXP)
all can be cfg: LAN, wifi etc

FYI ThP r51 the latest (and recomended) version wifi drv can be find
Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad R51 Networking: Wireless

OTOH for drv & sft upd
use ThP firmwares are strongly recomended: 'Software Installer'
(and/or 'ThinkVantage System Update')
