Ok, guys, I'd really, really appreciate any of your help.

I called Dell Tech Support because I have been having internet connection issues. My laptop receives wireless internet via a Belkin router.

While I am connected to the internet, I am having problems. When I try to download a file, on either firefox or IE, the download starts and then stops/stalls and will not finish. Sometimes the download 'finishes' right away without downloading any of the material. Basically, I can't download files, and on the rare chance that I am able to, the speed is very very slow.

With Dell tech support we determined it's not a hardware conflict (wireless card 'passed' test), i updated the firmware for the belkin router, the driver I had installed--intel pro wireless--was the right one. And the Dell guy tried tweaking a few settings with no luck.

Here was his conclusion: the problem is a software conflict caused by too many internet security programs (at the time I had KAV, Zone alarm pro firewall, windows defender, spybot, adware, and spyware blaster). He thinks this is wat is causing my bad connection and downloads to stall and suggests I reformat my computer, reinstall OS, reinstall drivers, and then only install like KAV and see what happens.

I'm hoping this helps. I thought I would be ok having one antvirus, one firewall, and a few spyware eliminators?? I guess not..does anyone have any suggestions / thoughts. The other computers receiving wireless internet are working fine, not sure what's weird about my laptop that it is not able to download files because they stall everytime, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I see a few issues. First, which Intel wireless chipset does your wireless use? Windows Defender and KAV have some issues together, I would uninstall Windows Defender. Also, Zone Alarm is known to have some connection issues, I would suggest trying Comodo.

how do i find out your chipset question?

basically I just installed the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Driver for an e1505 laptop off of dell.com and received wireless internet, although i've been having all the problems as previously mentioned.

also installed the Intel Mobile Chipset

OK, the 3945 chipset is very troublesome. First download the latest drivers from Intel here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=11342&lang=eng). Then uninstall the entire Intel Wireless Proset software and reboot, then install just the latest drivers that you just downloaded and use the built in wireless client that Windows XP has.

I reformatted, and reinstalled my drivers (including the intel one from the link you gave me), and my downloads seem to be working: so thanks mnosteele!

I guess I just have to be careful now with all the software I install so I don't install anything that conflicts with each other / makes my downloads not work?

Oh, and I should also run microsoft update and get IE 7 right? And would you recommend getting Kaspersky Internet Security Suite instead of all the progs i had before to decrease the chance of them conflicting with each other.

Thanks!

KAV is a good virus scanner

Zone alarm is the only bad thing sticking out as crappy from your list, never got into windows defender. comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) is a good firewall like steele said.

For spyware stick with spywareblaster, adaware, spybot, and super antispyware. That should be enough to keep ya busy lol
