Hi, my dads pc (old!) ran fine with a realtek broadband modem RTL8139/810x and we decided to get him a brand new pc.

So I set up and installed everything. switched on computer.. and it sees and recognises the modem, but it says that a "network cable is unplugged or hardware may need connecting".

I find this weird, because when I pull out the usb cable to the pc it makes the familiar 2-toned audio response (high note followed by low note).
When i reconnect the cable instead of making a low-high audio response it makes a different response of 2 low notes in quick succession, of the same audio level. I imagine this is some sort of error code.

I have tried to install/set up a new connection using windows xp, but it says I already have a connection which should work fine.. however the connection still says that it is unplugged.

Then I wondered... could it be a driver?

So I searched for a driver and "this is the one I downloaded and installed":
ftp://210.51.181.211/cn/nic/PCI_Inst...649_061120.zip whose originating download from page is here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

From this main page I downloaded the 2nd one in the list called:
Auto installation program (support WinXP 64/Win98SE/WinME/Win2K/WinXP ver.649))(Submission ID: 1220690)

However the installation program never mentioned RTL8139/810x but something else...

So guys... my question for now is.. do you believe it is a software problem? Im not sure, firstly because with the modem being plugnplay usb it found it the first time ...

or is it possible that maybe some sort of connection has not been made inside the pc??? I find it strange....

Im seriously hoping its just a software issue, and that maybe I insatlled thw wrong thing because further down that realtek.com list url, I have just seen some OEM download links...

So thats where Im at right now.. Im back at home now on my own pc, and hoping I will have a better idea for tomorrow.

By the way I put his old base unit back in for now, with same modem etc and its worked fine.

okdoke.. all done!

Thanks

Is this a USB attached cable or DSL modem?

Network cable is unplugged message will be from the ehthernet port, sounds like your setting up a usb device, but I'm confused lol

What brand and model mdoem is it?

Hi! and thanks for replying.

Its a Realtek RTL 8139/810x Family fast Ethernet NIC.

It is attached through a USB wire yes, using NTL (cable modem)

does this help?
thanks..

If your attaching the modem to the PC from USB then the realtek thign never comes into play. If you were plugging it in from an ethernet cable then you would need the NIC.

You need the driver for the modem.

On the cable modem, if its got the brand and model listed on it the drivers should be easy to find online.

Don't use USB unless you absolutely have to, just remove that cable and use an ethernet cable, it's much more reliable and faster.
