Ok, been scratching my head a lot for the past 2 days. And i cannot see what i am not doign right to get this done properly.

Here's the setup :

10 PC, all have Windows XP SP2.

Use simple file sharing is DISABLED. ( when i have this option on, it works... i can copy files )
but i need it off mainly for the TrendMicro Officescan.

So i create a directory.
Under the security tab : i add "Everyone". with Read & Execute, List Folder and Read permissions checked.
And in Advance : i have a check in the "Inherit from parent permission entries..." box.
So everything, folders and files, should get those permissions to any users.

Then under the Sharing tab : Share this folder <with whatever name i want>
maximum allowed # of clients.
and in the Permission section : i have only Everyone with Read permission checked only.

Done as is, i can browse my Workgroup, i see the computer, i can browse it. i see all folders and subfolders.
But as soon as i try to copy a file in any folders/subfolders, i get the error :

"Cannot copy File : Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the is not currently in use."

So i am wondernig what the " Use simple file sharing" does more than what i am doing manually... ?

Any ideas are greatly appreaciated. netbios over tcp/ip is set to default.
i don't see anythign else... and this makes me feel very stupid... it shoudl work! ;p
thx in advance

The problem is the workgroup. A user account only has local significance. Lets say you have the following:

Computer name: BOB-PC
User Name: Bob
Computer name: DAN-PC
User-name: Dan

In a workgroup the true full user account will be like: BOB-PC\Bob or DAN-PC\Dan

In a domain it would be: Domain\Bob (on every PC)

So your first step in giving the "Everyone" group access under security settings was good. That basically means you are not checking security accounts at all. You just need to add that same read/write permission to the share under share permissions.

What simple file sharing does is setup the guest account as a mehtod of authenticatying accross the computers. So each PC will have a account named Guest with no passowrd set. That is how it is easy to share everything with that method, this acount is automatically created with proper permissions for the level of access you chose in the wizard.

Ok... i gotta be stupid ;/

Trying to figure out the Security option you tried to point out and i can't figure it out.

I did a quick test. Added the Guest account as well in the parent directory and no luck.
Funny thing is, i can browse every folders and subfolders. and see the listing no problem. i simply cannot read or copy the file...

But a manual fix to my problem is : if i go in the "security" tab of the Parent Folder ( the folder i am sharing ) and go in "Advanced" ( for special permissions or for advanced settings ), and then i check the box that says : Replace permission entries on all children objects...

then its going to work because it will add the "Everyone" user to every files as well. then i can copy. But i don't want to do this step everytime i add a file in my shared folder.
It is only the Files that doesn't get permissions from the parent folder.
makes no sense to me ;/
