Sorry for the long post...

I recently agreed to add VOIP to my internet/cable package, all in the hope of saving a couple of bucks on the phone bill.

I have a Linksys WCG200 Cable Gateway/Wireless Router/4 port switch with which I connect my destop (wired) and my laptop (wireless).

The tech comes to hook up my new VOIP service and he has a VOIP modem with him. He tells me I will need to buy a new router (wireless) to be able to use my wireless connection. He said there was no way to use my linksys and the VOIP modem together, or that if he did, My wireless would be borked and I'd have to run cat5 from my laptop to the linksys or VOIP modem, whatever. Unacceptable.

long story short, he ran a splitter from the coax in the wall to the tv, VOIP modem and my Linksys. He had to have the ISP activate both modems which, unbeknownst to me, resulted in my being charged a $44.45 "additional modem" charge.

Well that ain't gonna happen so they tell me that I need to get a new wireless router (one without the coax in) and run cat5 out from the VOIP modem into a new wireless router and then out from the wireless router into my desktop.

He also tells me that my WCG200 is not able to accept incoming otherwise I could just use one of the ethernet jacks on my existing modem/router.

Can I do this?? Is there some configuration that needs to be changed to allow my existing modem/cable gateway to accept incoming from the VOIP modem and then out to my desktop (wired) and still use the wireless access point?

I called linksys and the guy couldn't understand what my question was! Am I missing something??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

They were right- you can't use this device with the Voip modem. The reason is simple- the only input connection on it is coax, and you need ethernet. Simple as that. Any other conventional wireless router that uses all ethernet connections will connect to your voip modem just fine. The good news is there's lots of them for under 50 bucks.
