View Full Version : Non-PC DVD players that can play WMV, etc?
Are there any major-brand DVD players that can play WMV and other video formats right off a CD-R without having to make a VCD of it? And yes, I'm referencing hardcore pornography here.

This player can, but it's networked, you can browse network from the dvd player.Take a look maybe it's something what you are looking for.link (http://www.onlybestrated.com/avel-linkplayer2-2006-high-definition-with-network-support-p-40.html?affiliate_banner_id=4&ref=4)

I need one with HDMI, however.

Obviously my own Google search phrase was not sufficient.
EDIT: It seems to be more of a home theater PC device than a standalone hardware DVD player, which is what I am looking for. And HDMI is a must.

Then you need this (http://www.svideo.com/ext-hdtv-cat5.html)

That's what I don't want to get into, adapters and whatnot. I just want a good brand DVD player that can play WMV right off a CD-R. Seems that there aren't any out there that aren't home theater PC type devices.

It looks to be able to connect, but also play all those formats via that DVD-ROM drive. As you say, no HDMI.
I'll keep looking.
Dunno where you can buy these though. Link (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&Search=Search&dvdportable=&dvdchanger=&dvdtv=&dvdhdmi=1&wmv9=1&chipset=&orderby=Name&hits=50&Submit2=Search)
A modded X-Box is still the best standalone multi-format player but doesn't have hdmi or dvi. :(
my phillips DVP642 plays about anything, not sure about WMV though, xvid FTW :)

There is NO stand alone DVD player with HDMI yet.
Thats what he is looking for.

That Xoro player looks very nice.
However --

Some german folks who have it apparently don't think much of it :P
That Xoro player looks very nice.
Yes it does, but it doesnt have network support.
Thanks for the help, guys, but I think some of you are confusing WMA with WMV. Most of the models you linked to support WMA files, not video.

Not that it adds anything to the issue at hand, but I just picked up a DVD player at BB that does upconversion, HDMI and DivX.
I'm in love.

I dont have one, but do you/can you see the difference while playing regular DVD movie?

If you are talking DivX vs. regular DVD, yes. You can tell the DivX isn't a perfect picture. Sometimes it'll jump or the audio will sound a little distorted for a second. However, considering I have 8 one-hour episodes of a British TV show (TopGear) on one DVD, that isn't bad at all.
It is perfectly watchable and enjoyable. You can just tell it's compressed and you aren't getting the full effect. The convenience factor sets off the quality 10 fold.

I was looking at this one but it's too expansive IMO ...but the features are great.
Will wait few months tho, let me know what do you think about this player.

Yeah, I agree. That is too much for a DVD player. For what I need, (up-conversion, HDMI and DivX) I wasn't going to go above $125 or so. I found this one at $85 or so and had a BB gift card.
Score!

Can you give me a link which one you got please?
I'm looking for some but I'm not going to spend 300 bucks for dvd player, no bloody way.

Does that player upconvert over component, or only HDMI?
And yes, I'm being too lazy to google it. :p

Well, this is directly from the Phillips site:
With Video Upscaling you can increase the resolution of SD (Standard Definition) video signals that DVD uses to HD (High Definition) so you’ll be able to see more details thanks to a sharper, more true-to-life picture. The resulting HD video output signal can be fed to an HD display through HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).
Not looking good for the component side. I'm not sure though.

Awesome price for the features.
I think I'm picking it up this week.
Thank you.

One downfall I've found is that when you turn off the unit mid-movie, it won't pick it up where you left it off. Not a big deal, but worthy of letting you know. A little nuisance.

So you still didn't find one, eh? I'll throw a disc in my player tonight and see if it chokes and pukes or magically plays it. Should I test it with that greasy movie you posted and them promptly removed from your site a few weeks back? I'm sure that'll look SWEET on 50".

I figured as much, since Hollywood frowns upon that, but I still have my eyes on the lookout for such a feature without the need for custom firmwares. Thanks for the info though. :)

The 360 actually does that, but it does not have HDMI capabilities at the moment.

No-go on the WMV.
Sorry.

Burke, I ask around on a couple of sites and I couldn't find a DVD player that did what you ask.
MM...you mentioned you thought the Oppo 981 was too much money. I suppose it depends on point of view. It gets killer reviews for it's upconversion. Up to 1080P. It's also a universal player in that it'll play both SACD's and DVD-A's. HDMI only on the vid out. No component.
Oppo also makes the 971 too, which is another universal upconverting player.

High definition up-conversion with film-like picture quality to up-convert 720x480 interlaced video encoded on DVD discs to 480p/720p/1080i
High-quality pure digital video and audio through a single HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable
Multiple high definition video formats through HDMI and component outputs*: NTSC: 480i/480p/720p/1080i; PAL: 576i/576p/720p/1080i (* Component output for CSS-encrypted DVD discs (almost all commercially pressed DVD discs) is limited to 480i/480p only.)
Anyway this one also gets killer reviews and isn't so expensive. $149.00
