EDIT: It seems to be more of a home theater PC device than a standalone hardware DVD player, which is what I am looking for. And HDMI is a must.

That's what I don't want to get into, adapters and whatnot. I just want a good brand DVD player that can play WMV right off a CD-R. Seems that there aren't any out there that aren't home theater PC type devices.

It looks to be able to connect, but also play all those formats via that DVD-ROM drive. As you say, no HDMI.

A modded X-Box is still the best standalone multi-format player but doesn't have hdmi or dvi. :(

I dont have one, but do you/can you see the difference while playing regular DVD movie?

If you are talking DivX vs. regular DVD, yes. You can tell the DivX isn't a perfect picture. Sometimes it'll jump or the audio will sound a little distorted for a second. However, considering I have 8 one-hour episodes of a British TV show (TopGear) on one DVD, that isn't bad at all.

It is perfectly watchable and enjoyable. You can just tell it's compressed and you aren't getting the full effect. The convenience factor sets off the quality 10 fold.

Yeah, I agree. That is too much for a DVD player. For what I need, (up-conversion, HDMI and DivX) I wasn't going to go above $125 or so. I found this one at $85 or so and had a BB gift card.

Well, this is directly from the Phillips site:

One downfall I've found is that when you turn off the unit mid-movie, it won't pick it up where you left it off. Not a big deal, but worthy of letting you know. A little nuisance.

Burke, I ask around on a couple of sites and I couldn't find a DVD player that did what you ask.

MM...you mentioned you thought the Oppo 981 was too much money. I suppose it depends on point of view. It gets killer reviews for it's upconversion. Up to 1080P. It's also a universal player in that it'll play both SACD's and DVD-A's. HDMI only on the vid out. No component.



Oppo also makes the 971 too, which is another universal upconverting player.
