This will answer your question---which, essentially, if you have windows 98, means let windows manage it.

My personal opinion here. Leave it alone, if it`s not broke, don`t fix it !!!!!!!!
I set the Virtual Memory setting to Twice my RAM on ALL my PCs.
By setting the Virtual Memory [swap file] to an optimal setting, you can prevent windows from continuously Resizing it, which windows does Not do efficiently.
Some say to make it the same size as your RAM.
Some will say that 256 is the Max setting.
For 256MB RAM, the setting should be 256 or 512 for both Min & Max. You can always change it if you want to try another setting.
I have tried many settings [in multiples of the RAM value] on my 128MB box, I use 256 for an optimal setting. Made a big diff.
All PCs are not equal, you can try 512, 256 then if you don't like it, just change it back.
The MAIN point is to make the min & Max value the SAME.
Would guess that 256 for Min & Max would be optimal for 256 MB RAM. [ learned this from MS research dept. ]

No real reason for speed, the only reason is fragmenation. I set mine at 300 and I have 256megs of ram.
