I am fairly new to ripping and burning DVD's and I have some home movie VHS tapes made from my old VHS camcorder that I would like to move to DVD disk. What are some things I should look for? I have heard some tapes will come out dark and some to light.
Right now all I have to work with is a VHS player and a DVD burner in my computer. I was thinking of getting a multi-media card so I can take an input from the existing VHS player I have. But if there are better options, I would like to hear what other SGrs have learned before I jump in and buy stuff that might not work as well.
i did this a few years ago, i used a cheap TV tuner card to capture the video from the VCR using either virtualDub or virtualVCR, can't recall which but both are freeware. you can adjust the brightness and whatnot while caprtureing i think.
i used the huffy codec to capture as it is a lossless cmopression to save some disc space, and use a seperate hard drive from the operating system to avoid dropping frames.
used virtualDub to make some slight edits and saved video/audio set to direct stream copy.
then try something like nerovison express or maybe the TMPGEnc tools to make the DVD.

I also used VirtualDub. Great little program. What I did is this path for capturing the video since I also don't have a tv tuner card.
VHS to DV camera to PC (using virtual dub)
Your going to use A LOT of hard drive space for the original capture. Then compress it down and burn to dvd disk using any assorted dvd burning software. (lots out there to use) Basically what Mark said. :) :thumb:
You can do a couple of different things...
1. if you have a mini-dv camcorder, then you can record your VHS onto the camcorder, then connect the camera to the computer, and import it from there.
2. Get a digital media Hub that has RCA inputs into the back of the pc, and hook up the video out from the VCR and hook it up to the digital hub.
I suggest the first one ;)

Some MiniDVs permit throughput from analog directly to computer.
I use pinnacle studio 8 works well, better than that dazzle unit
I used a tuner card and Windows Media Encoder to encode since it's free and easy to use.
