I took this picture on a hike in the South American rainforest (border between Argentina & Brazil near Iguazu falls) back in June '05. Very cool looking bird, I have no clue what species though. Maybe a cousin of the North American Blue Jay? Anyone wanna take a guess?

ah thank you David! The mystery is solved.
I had been scouring the internet but never found an exact match. Now that I google that name, it is a perfect match and as google mentions, they are a very curious species and were not afraid to approach people. I could have reached out and grabbed the one in this pic.

Like most Jays, the South American species have adapted well to the presence of humans. Some even become relatively tame.
