View Full Version : Different Windows XP Broadband connection types?

Although I am ultimately trying to find out why my new SKY Broadband install cuts off after 15-20 minutes use, I have always been puzzled by the 2 different Win XP Broadband connection types I have always had. I have a Router/Wireless ADSL combined unit with 1 wired PC and 1 wireless PC.

Mostly, when I turn on PC, or reboot Router (previously Netgear 824, now Sky version of Netgear 834GT), XP comes up with 'Internet Connection in now Connected' in Systray.

Clicking shows Internet Gateway Status and Duration. (Duration currently sticks at 15-22 minutes!) Properties shows 'This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer'. In Network Connections, under Internet Gateway, Internet Connection is shown.

I have tried altering various settings in SETTING UP A HOME NETWORK, from direct, thru a gateway, to other, but it makes no difference, so I assume this is not connected with the Internet Connection status?

However, sometimes after turning PC on, or after a reboot of Router, there is NO Internet Connection shown in Sys Tray or in Network Connections, but connection is fine and doesnt appear to TURN off at 15-20 minutes but stays on permanently.

I have always had these 2 types of connection (one notified and working, other just working), is this normal?

Its relevent now as I think the non-notified connection is ok (might just be a coincidence it has stayed on all day) wheras the notified connection only ever lasts upto 20 minutes.

Also strange is that after losing Internet Connection, with Duration stuck at 15 minutes, sometimes email is still active - cant explain that one either!

Hey There;
Just surfed in looking around how to get a better health connection with Azureus when I saw your post.
I had a similiar problem at one time. Lose browsing capablilties but could still get on yahoo and keep downloading with Azureus? Mine would quit after about 2 hrs. the only thing I could figure out that it was somehow linked to my screensaver. Turned it off, and now I never lose my browser.
...still have'nt figured out why.
I think it's a strange quirk with XP..??? Think if I knew what I was doing it has something to do with being logged as a user instead of logged in as the administrator with this xp system?

Hope this gave you a couple ideas.
[got me wonderin again]
