I have a problem with an extra computer I have. It has a windows 98 SE os on it and it will not get on the internet via direct line to my cable modem. I had it hooked up about a month ago through my old roommates router but now I am trying to hook it right into my new cable modem and it will not connect. I know I have internet because I am on it right now with my other computer.

I have tried to release the ip but it will not release and it stays invalid. I am not sure what to do at this point but I am sure it is a tcp/ip problem. Anyone care to help?

Thanks

Cable modems have a tendancy to memorize the MAC address of the first device plugged into them. If you switch devices..it won't talk to them..it will still want the MAC back of the prior device.

You can get a cable modem to "forget" this MAC by powering it off for several minutes..then power it up while plugged into the new device.

A few ISPs register MAC addresses upstream at their servers..but this isn't common anymore.

Would it do this even if I moved and have a new modem?

i have everything configured to automatically obtain my ip in the network properties page.

My old roommate and i were useing a linksys router and a motorola modem to share the internet but now I have a new arris modem and am just trying to plug into the modem. he configured it so I am not sure what was done but I think the settings from the linksys router that I no longer use are still in place.

Does that sound like what is going on?

that seems to be the problem. and it will not release the ip. I have even tried to release the ip in dos mode too and it will not work. should I uninstall the network card and try to reinstall it? or is there another way to fix my problem.

...thanks for getting back to me Ken....my real name is Ken too just to let you know

ok...just wanted to let eveyone know that I got it to work and I am useing that computer to write this message.

For anyone who might have the same problem here is what I did to fix it.

I sat down and watched sin city as I drank a few beers and hoped I still had my network card drivers in a box some place. Then just broke down and uninstalled the drivers and then tore my closet up trying to find my driver disk. Installed the drivers again and it worked.

I am not sure as to what the exact problem was but un-installing and re-installing my network drivers fixed the problem....( think the beers helped too)

Thanks again Ken for lending me your time...I will check the boards to see if I can help other people here with anything.
