I got this from a friend and it seems logical, but I'm not up on worms. I think it might not work as written. So is there any truth to this? (See below).
-----------------------------------

As you may know, when and if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your e-mail address book, and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates.

This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has got into your system.

Here's what you do:
First, open your address book and click on "new contact",Just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of e-mail addresses.

In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in AAAAAAA. Also type in the e-mail address as AAAAAAA@a.aaa (AAAAAAA@a.aaa)

Now. Here's what you've done and why it works:
The name AAAAAAA will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But, when it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA,

It will be undeliverable because of the phoney e-mail address you entered. If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phoney address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

Here's the second great advantage of this method:
If an e-mail cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your "In Box" almost immediately. Hence,
If you ever get an e-mail telling you that an e-mail addressed to AAAAAAA could not Be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system.

You can then take steps to get rid of it! If everybody you know does this, then you need not ever worry about opening mail from friends.

First point is not true. Why must a worm act singularly and in decending order?

The 2nd point can be true. But when you know, so would some of your friends who have already opened their mails.

The last point is not true due to the error of the first point.

I've read that before..but I believe it's not as easy as it seems, as it seems most worms will forward to a few randoms on your addy book.

But even assuming a worm is coded to hit the first entry in your addy book...I doubt it cares wether it gets an NDR or not. Lots of people have incorrect entries in their addy book...I'd bet a pint of Guinness that the worm writers realize this....the worm will take a shotgun effect..in the hopes that at least more than 1 made it out.

Yeah I was thinking it was kind off info... The person who sent it to me was pretty excited to find it. Some of it made sense. Assuming a worm was coded to start on the first address and then press on discribed above.

But after that, I was thinking meh... It looks good on paper, but I'm pretty sure it would not entirely work. Since I'm not a code monky. I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for the quick reply.
