I think the drivers don't work

Hi all, i hope someone can help!!, i've a monitor that i use for everything and it normaly doesn't need drivers other then windows 98 drivers, wel i've a system i'm minding for a friend and it recgonises there's a monitor there, but it only has 16 colours, or black and white and it's only a 14 inch monitor so i use 800x600 but this other system has it stuck on 640 x 480 is there anything i can do to get it off?? i've downloaded a dozen drivers (monitor.inf) none of them worked, i've no idea what my monitor is it's so old, please help

What kind and make that monitor of yours is?
Interlaced or not?
Looks like windows doesn't recognize it, perhaps you do need to update your video drivers

Sounds like the video drivers are gone. Most monitors will do the res your trying to get but not if there is no video drivers. Go to the device manager and open up display adapters and if tells you "standard pci graphics adapter" the drivers are not installed if it does have anything other they could just be blown out. Another thing is to put the system into safemode and check the display adapter and monitor again and if its got more than one entry then remove all but the one the system really has.
