Help with connection speed please?!

ok i just got a new laptop from best buy ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7868097&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01174&id=1142301546128 ) and this wireless router ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7831518&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat25300050001&id=1142296157228 ) and i set everything up, ran the disc that came with the router and all that. I got the wireless connection finally to work after a bunch of trying with a connection speed of 54 Mbps! Now the router box said up to 210 mbps or something, now I know thats with the netgear pc card but shouldnt the connection speed be higher than 54 Mbps???? What should I do to get this speed higher, do i have to buy any additional things? i mean the computer should be able to run faster speeds than that, right? Anyway what should I do to get that speed up?

54 Megabits is the maximum you can send-receive with your Intel Pro ABG wifi chipset.

Tony is right, but what you need to understand is that 54mbps is only the speed you transfer data from your pc to the router.

To make sure you optimize that update your drivers from Intel for your wireless card and I would uninstall Intel's utility and use XP's built in wireless setup.

There is no point in buying a wireless card, it will not increase your internet speed at all.

You don't need to change anything. It's a new computer so probably has the most up-to-date drivers already.

The wireless rate of 54 MegaBits/second is NOT the Internet rate. 54 Mb/s is the rate when transferring between computers on your local home network ONLY.

I would bet you don't have the latest drivers, they just released new one's less than a week ago and many times on a new pc the drivers are a year or two old. Here is a link to Intel 2915 drivers (http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm), I will warn you that every time I have setup a wireless setup with that chipset it was terrible, there are numerous issues with it, you might actually be better off with adding a wireless card.

I have advised my clients to stay away from Intel laptops with this wireless chipset family because of the issues, my laptop has the 2200 chipset and sometimes it works perfect and other times it simply won't connect. Intel is aware of these issues but has done nothing to fix it.

Download these drivers (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?&DwnldID=11141&ProductID=2570) and see if it helps. If you try everything and cannot get it to work properly then try the card, you van always return the card if you need to.

Make sure you drop the wireless mode in your router from "240" to "g-only"..since you're not using a Nutgear N NIC.

I actually prefer the Intel Centrino for wireless, I try to stick with it for clients.

What is it you're measuring your online speeds with? What makes you think your downloads are slow? What are you using to measure downloads?

Unless you are transferring video, 54 should be plenty fast enough. From reading through the message, I assume you are having issues with your internet connection, download speeds. Go here and test the connection:

Also try to elaborate more in your messages. We know you can't figure something out, but what is it exactly you are having problems with.

OK, thanks. What is says at the bottom right hand corner will be the LOCAL network connection, 54 megaBITS. That's as fast as can go on the LOCAL network. The Internet rate is controlled by your ISP (modem), not the wifi. The local network = the connection from your computer to the router & any other comps connected to the router. The Internet connection = the rate set by the ISP & that is limited by them.

Actually no it doesn't, that's the duplex mode or your ethernet card, it will either be 10mbps or 100mbps.

I can tell you that no matter what wireless card you use it will most always be slower than a wired connection.

Yes & no. See post above this from mnosteele52.
Your desktop says 100mbs because that is the maximum it can run on the LOCAL network, NOT the Internet. The network icon in lower right tray always shows LOCAL network connection, NOT Internet connection. To find out what speed your internet connection is you must go to one of the web sites that measure your speed, and the speed will always vary, it is NOT constant. The sites test your speed of the connection from you to that site.
