Me and a friend went out to buy RAM for his 28 (LMFAO) MB RAM system. He bought 128 MB RAM for $80. "Platinum Memory" is what it says on the cover.. So, he's all hype because the guy told him his computer experience is going from riding a bike, to driving a car. My friend's system is like the weirdest.. I've never heard of a friggin system with 28 RAM.. lol.. He has Windows 98 Plus Edition... lmaooo, I never heard of that neither.. Anyway, I open up his computer.. Very old, just two, odd placed EMPTY RAM slots. How could he have 28 MB RAM if he has no RAM in his slots?!?! Putting in the RAM was a pain because his CPU was poorly built, placing the RAM slots in a tiny, VERY hard to reach place. So I put it in.. (The RAM you perverts..) The first slot I tried didn't work.. and adding to that.. his Windows didn't detect his mouse connected! It's a very old friggin mouse, the pin kind, three button, no wheel. We rebooted his computer over 20 times.. Finally detected mouse, his machine didn't detect the RAM... so I tried the other slot.. NOPE... All that for nothing.. So I told him that I would buy it from him if it worked on my system, he told me to go ahead and try it... I just spent three hours trying to start up my puter.. I was going to break those little RAM chips.. My computer automatically turns on my monitor, and does a "boop" noise before it does.. with his RAM in my puter.. it was a 5 second boop.. followed by another, another, etc. The only way I could stop it was by turning it off from the switch, in the back. This went on for three damn hours. Switching RAM back and forth and my computer still wouldn't start. Until I said a little prayer.. Kissed my crusifix.. and pressed that power button.. then **vualla**.. one "boop" I loved to hear. That was a friggin nightmare.. Why does my machine do that?? I left the original RAMs in the two slots they were already in (I only have three slots) and just added the new one. Even AFTER I took the new one out of my machine it wouldnt work.. I almost cried.. :( Anyway.. just sharing my near death experience... Me? Touch them RAM slots? Never again!

I know this is the software forum.. but there was no Hardware forum.. sorry if I bored you... :( Later.. back to 120 RAM :(

Did you guys even research your friends computer to see what type and how much ram it could support?

You were installing simms. I hate that kind of ram it is the hardest . I have worked with to get it seated and up and running. Sounds like you may have got it backwords I couple of times. The times it beep means it was not seated. The newer mother boards I have been working with now can use one or the other . I most usely use sdram in them now when I build them where I work. A lot less hassle. :(

(at the risk of being flamed for posting to the wrong forum)
Sounds like:
a: system ram is integrated on the m/b
b: you bought the wrong ram
c: 24MB is not bad for an old board (windows 3.1 used to really hum with 24MB of ram.)
I guess you are going to have to do some (oh no, don't say it)research, and find some details like, what does that board support?
Does it take simms or dimms? what speed and size ram? (60ns & 70ns common for simms) did he buy simms or dimms? if he bought simms, did he buy 2? for simms you have to have 2 because the memory is addressed in pairs. if he bought simms that is the reason they wouldn't work in your machine that uses dimms. (and if they are simms, how did you get them to seat properly in your board?)
after saying all that and they are dimms, they might not have worked in your machine because they are bad(static electricity?)or the wrong speed.
i guess ram really isn't "plug-n-play",you have to do your homework before spending your money. (i hope they have a liberal return policy)
hope this helps

umm... did you fully read the first post? My friend is the one with the old computer... not me.. If I had 24 RAM I would've killed myself a long time ago. I think I would know what would fit in my board, I'm not gonna stuff anything in there that wouldn't fit. Late response on something that was resolved the same day... "I ALMOST KILLED MYSELF". Meaning that I fixed it.. Thanks for your concern, I appreciate you tryin to help. I feel bad for my friend though... 28 MB of RAM... yikes :( Later :D
