Depending on your router...there are some 3rd party firmwares you can install on your router to kick it up a few notches...such as for the Linksys wrt54G series.

Try changing channels...usually by default routers/APs will run on channel 6. But due to many variables..sometimes flipping to channel 1 or 11 will make it run better.

Latest firmware on the router is usually a good idea

If you're running encryption..use WPA instead of old WEP. Less overhead..and more secure, plus easier to setup.

Besides all the other security reasons for installing service pack 2 for XP...it improved the wireless config utility.

Latest drivers for your wireless NIC

Make sure your SSID is not default..incase you have a neighbor with the same brand..it'll probably broadcast the same SSID. I see this problem often. Your wireless clients don't know which way to go.

Yes, now pls tell us the bandwidth, e.g. what speeds do they provide you, e.g. how many megabits download and how many megabits upload. Reason: no matter what tweaks you do you can never get more bandwidth (speed transfer rates) than what they provide you.

For example, if they provide 1.5 megabits download and x megabits upload, then the fastest you can ever go is 1.5 megabits download. However, with dsl, your speeds will be affested by how close you live to the central office. If they provide 1.5 megabits download that does not mean you will get 1.5 megabits download. The best may only be half of that.
