what kind of device is used in building mesh networking?

Assuming you're referring to wireless mesh...as there is mesh networking, and mesh networking over wireless.
It's still evolving, I don't believe there's a standard yet..but as WIMAX and other metropolitan and campus wireless networks evolve...wireless mesh will by a main component of it.
To put it in really simple terms...as far as wireless mesh...it's not unlike WDS that you'd implement in a home or office. You use access points to act as repeaters...to gain coverage. One only has to have the range to make it as far as the next node. That next extends the range to the next node.
You can get redundancy in there...so that they overlap each other a bit more..so if one node goes down..the others overlap can somewhat cover it.
Into the mix..there's a bit of load balancing...with plain WDS..you're latched onto one access point..the closest one. With mesh..the ideas will be to somewhat distribute it more....seems you can latch onto several nearby nodes.
