I have a SMC SMC7908VoWBRA, recently setup. But the wlan signal keep droping. I found this article in FAQ session.

Wireless networks' performance is affected by a variety of factors, such as the distance between nodes, walls/obstacles that obstruct direct line-of-sight, and other wireless traffic in the general area (such as the presence of 802.11b devices in the 802.11g network, or the presence proprietary non-standard WiFi technologies).

But how to resolve this?

There are a number of things to try.

1) Update your router to the latest firmware.

2) Use WPA or WPA2 encryption, NOT WEP.

3) Update your wireless card in your pc to the latest drivers and disable any power saving features.

4) Place your router in a central location at the highest point possible.

5) Do not place your router near cordless phones or halogen lights.

In addition...some of the more common factors I see which create poor wireless performance...

*Make your SSID unique. If someone else has the same brand router as yours, you might have the same SSID.....which with the more common brands such as Linksys, Netgear, etc...is the brand itself. I'm not sure on your SMC..as I haven't worked on an SMC wireless in a couple of years...but make sure it's unique. If a neighboring WLAN has the same SSID as yours....your client computers can become confused as to which to connect to.

*Change channels. Most routers default to 6. If there are other neighboring WLANs in your area, they may also be on channel 6. Try a different channel, a non-overlapping channel such as 1 or 11. Some newer routers have an "auto-channel" feature..it's supposed to "hunt" around for a non-clogged channel. May or may not work for you. But I've seen manually changing channels make a whole world of improvement in some cases. There are other environmental factors besides other wireless networks....even those speed pass gas station pumps.

*Cordless phones and wireless LANs don't mix...if you have a cordless on the same frequency, or your neighbor does.
