Slow Internet Connection

I purchased a new Dell XPS 400 over Christmas, which gave me two WinXP computers. Of course, I wanted to set up a home network, which I did. The only problem is that the connection speed between the two computers and the internet download times are slower than a 56K modem. The router I purchased is a NetGear 108Mbps Wireless Firewalll Router, WGT624v3. Prior to setting up the network, the connection speed between the new computer and the cable modem was as expected. Now, download speeds are slower than a dog and sharing files between the two computers is next to impossible. However, I also have a laptop from work that I connect wirelessly and the internet page load time is as expected. But, to pull up the same web page on one of the desktops takes 3-4 times as long, if it even loads.

I know this is kind of vague, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you certain that you are connecting to your own wireless network, and not another one in the area?

Yes. Our wireless access point is named and the name displays on the laptop when connected.
