I'v moved from a single Win98 computer connected directly to a cable modem to a Win2k Pro machine acting as a server, connected to the cable modem, and using ICS to share the connection through a second NIC, which hooks to a hub then to my previous Win98 machine (and more to come). Now I'm not so sure what the best settings are to tweak with. Obviosly, the NIC in the server that attaches to the cable modem could use similar registry tweaks as I used previously (except in Win2k versions), but I'm not quite sure what tweaks should be applied to the other two NIC's. Should then client be optimized for my internet connection, or local network? I know my <1ms local ping would be best suited to a smaller RWIN, but would those values be used for the internet? Do the settings on the server affect the throuput of the client machines, or does it just relay everything as-is? I also don't know what to do about ICS... the reg tweak guide talks about changing the RWIN for ICS, but it's specific to Win98. I know that ICS in Win2k is slightly different, so does the same hold true?

TIA for any help!

Well its been found the the client machines should be tweaked the same as the server with proxy,ICS and a router.
As fare as ICS tweak in win2k it may not applie due to the stack in that OS.. But I suggest reading through this 3 page thread on win2k it goes over tweaking that OS.
From start to finish.

It turned out to be a very good discussion on this tweaking there are also some good links in there to help you out.
I run win2k over a router now but also as a proxy server I think once you get it figured out you'll want to change all your machines to it.
One last thing if you don't tweak all of them the same esp. with ICS you may run into slow connect's on the client machines.
Good luck and have fun with it.
