Should I set my NIC to full or half duplex or does it matter?

What brand NIC do you have? I ask because the 3com cards have an "auto negotiation" setting that will set this mode for you. Some other NICs probably have a similar setting too.
Before I discovered that setting, I played with each mode manually. On full-duplex I encountered no connectivity.
Hope it helps.

It's a D-Link 528 10/100. I have the Realtek monitoring program and when I have it on full duplex it reports all sorts of errors in the transmission while there are 0 with half duplex. So I guess I'll stay on half. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
Cable systems can only handle 10mbps @ half-duplex. Setting the NIC to 100mbps and/or full-duplex may result in unusual performance or loss of connection.

well, i have my Connection Type and Full/Half-duplex settings at "Not Present", and mine seems to work very nicely (800K/sec)
You may all want to read through this thread from speedcorp about network cards and the difference it can make

also this one on tweaking a linksys network card it may applie to your card.

I run my network card at half duplex. weather its at TX 100 or T10 it depends on how you connect if your connected direct with out a router then T10 half duplex is fine but your card may handle full duplex better in some cases.

I used the logic that full must be better than half, right? http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif Then I had serious connection problems, so bigger isn't necessarily better in some cases.
My understanding is that cable technology can't handle full-duplex mode, but I'm really a networking novice.. best bet is to stick with what works, and maybe one of the experts here can clarify the difference between full and half duplex.
dont use full duplex, most modems have a big time problem with it and youll get slow downs.
