View Full Version : Internet Connection Hangs
I'm experiencing a rather annoying problem with my Internet connection that maybe someone may be able to help me with.
I'm using Road Runner by Time Warner in the NYC area. Using Internet Explorer as my default browser and Windows 98.
The modem I’m using is a Toshiba PCX1100. The NIC is a 3Com USB Network Interface.
I have the TCP/IP protocol for the network card set to the following:
Obtain an IP address automatically
Use DCHP for Wins Resolution
My entries under Gateway tab are all blank.
DNS configuration is set to Disable DNS
Periodically, and randomly, my Internet connection just stalls. This started occurring when I got my cable modem. I will be just merrily browsing the Internet and randomly the browser will just stop responding. It won't freeze. It'll be fully interactive it just won't retrieve any information from the Internet.
I can click a link and nothing happens. Nothing will happen for about thirty seconds (maybe a little longer) and then the page will load. At first I thought the problem was just with IE so then I tried to retrieve mail from Outlook Express and/or sign on to AIM during this period of stalling and those seem to stall as well until the period of the hang is over and then continue with their processes as normal.
It doesn't seem to be related to my speed because when the connection is actually retrieving or sending data it works at the speeds Road Runner promises. It just periodically the connection stalls and then returns to normal on its own after anywhere from thirty seconds to a bit longer.
Anyone able to help? It would be appreciated.

i had the same problem, but when mine would stall it would stall until i rebooted my computer. i then switched the modem connection from the USB adapter to a pci network card, and its working fine. USB is troublesome.
hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. Just keep winipcfg open and when it stalls, release and refresh and all will be well.
They're coming to change the modem on Saturday.

WINS RESOLUTION should be disabled.

I wanted to this when I first saw it but didn't get a chance. Do you think it is still the same problem even though when you are affected by the symptom you have to reboot? The reason I ask is I would hate to install an internal NIC if we aren't experiencing the same problem. Too troublesome.
Actually, now that I think about it, my computer I think comes with internal LAN capabilities (preinstalled NIC. However, when I plug my cable modem in it doesn't seem to work or recognize it is there. Could this because I'm already using the LAN for Intel PCI Phoneline Home Networking? If so, would it be possible to install an internal NIC even though one is already being used by the Intel Networking? I think that may be why I can't just plug the modem into the networking outlet.
Anyway, you think the problem is really caused because I have a USB modem? The fact that you had to reboot and I don't makes me a bit skeptical.

I've tried it both ways. Either way this problem occurs.

So it's a hardware issue with the modem? Might I ask what modem you are using?

I decided to give the release/renew method a try (its better than nothing) and no dice. When this stalling occurs winipcfg is frozen (even if its open from beforehand) so I can't release/renew.

Just change your nic to a pc nic. I would it will stop your problems. Those modems run better with pc nic. I have the same modem and it works fine. Plus I get good speeds.
Goodluck!

Goodluck! No you can install another nic.I have the same modem and it is not ubs.Check and see if it has a adapter on it. If so remove it. Plus uninstall your networking before you install the new nic. And let the computer reconize it. Then just reset every thing back up.
Ikspec: I have the exact same setup as you (same Windows settings & the same modem w/ RR), except for the USB Network Interface. I use a PCI Network card instead, and I have had no problems. Like mrrisotto said, "USB is troublesome."
Hi,
I've been trying a few things here and there and so far I'm still having the same problem. As soon as I have a few free moments I'll probably go and get an internal NIC. One question though, is there anyway I could find out how many PCI slots my computer has, I'm not sure if it has any free (the manual doesn't state anything about that).
Also I've been trying to determine if it actually is the USB NIC and I came across something odd. When these hangs occur there is something that isn't affected by them. There's a text-based game which I play and has been on while one of these hangs with my other internet programs has occurred yet I can still send and receive data from the game. If the problem is related to the USB NIC wouldn't all data sent via the Internet hang?
Also, to add some new information it seems when these hangs occur my modem data transfer light doesn't blink. Thanks for all your help so far guys http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

I think its not locked up ( hanging) but just going so slow it looks that way.
You mentioned you have a home networking set up.Try disableing that in MSCONFIG; start up; reboot and see if it hangs now.
I had wingate home networking and for some reason it works with cable but only for a while then same symptoms as you.
open your case and count the slots.doubtful they are all filled up.

I am having the EXACT same problem... random hangs and disonnecting and reconnecting is the only way to solve it.........ok here is my set-up
-Athlon 1.1ghz
-392 pc133 ram
-60gig 7200 ultra/ata100 HD {3 partitions of 98SE WinME and Win2000 PRO}
-Broadcom HPNA 56k-10/100mb modem/netcard( meaning it is the same card with both a 56k and 10/100 built into it for home networking)
blah blah blah........
ok ihave gotten a new broadcom modem and still the same problem....i swithed back to an OLD 56k winmodem and NO NO NO problems..... then i put in the modem from my PIII 550 which is just some regular 56k pci modem but is still a good modem and never gave me any troubles....and NO problems with that modem.... i switch back to the HPNA modem and BAM.... that ****ty thing hangs on me.........
so here is my solution for all who are having this problem......
GET rid of that poorly tested Home networking netcards or modems and any software that comes with it.......... i truly believe that this whole,,, and very new home networking modems and netcards that are out there are not and have not been tested properly but any time i try to get a new and different modem from the gateway tech support all they say is that all i can have is the same modem on an exchange... for gods sake people I WORK FOR GATEWAY and cant even get those asses to help me out.....
But seriously... it has been my experience that these HPNA---Home Phoneline Networking modems/netcards are very very unstable and should be replaced with standard modems and netcards.....
i hate to go back to the other modems cause i was connecting faster than i ever did with that Broadcom modem... oh well
great idea! But how do you remove diamond multimeada home phone line network. I've tried add remove and the uninstall that came with the program. It uninstalls fine but IE5 won't work after I reboot. Neither will netscape.(can't find server error message)
My guess is winsock. but I don't know how or where to fix it.
I tried IE5 repair tool but I havn't tried reinstalling IE after removing wingate.
At the moment I have wingate reomved from start-up and it all works fine.

Hey man. Before you drive yourself crazy, I had the same problem, but with Verizon DSL. It might be a router problem thats outside of your house. When I had that problem, it was a CO problem. Call you ISP or cable company and have them resolve this. Dont drive yourself crazy like I did. Remember, I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I bet once you sign on to AOL or any other service you dont have this problem. Only when you surf the net right? If so... I wont repeat it, just scroll up. Again, call you ISP/Cable Company and get them to fix it. If you threaten to cancel your account, I bet they will get the lead out of their ass!
Peace!!!

I'm very interested in this thread. Has any prograss been made?
Ikspec- you think its just the cable CO end and this is a "way of life" with cable?
I wish there was a fancy utility program that just blerted out what the hold up was. wouldn't that be neet? And made a report ;and sent it to the cable CO .

No, I don't think it is a "way of life." Unfortunately, though I have not been able to get to the root of the problem. I haven't yet tried to disable home networking because I do need that. However, I don't see any reason why cable should not work with that and if it doesn't, it should. I'm having someone come down from the cable company next week to install a new PCI card and I'm not letting him leave my house until he solves it http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
