I've been reading the options of connecting two inhouse machines to Roadrunner, and I think I'm fairly straight with that, or I'll ask again later, but will there be a problem connecting a win95 OS(older PC) with a win98 OS (newer PC) thru a hub or linksys type connection? Have heard about the ways to connect, but haven't heard much discussion about connecting different OS's.

If you use a router, you will only need one routable IP. Same applies when using a server instead of a router.

BTW, don't RR customers get more than one routable IPs included in their acct. (i.e., at no extra charge)? I could have sworn I read this on this forum. If this is the case, you will only need a hub.

regarding the multiple IP's...don't think so in my area, but I can doublecheck that. My primary concern was the different OS's, because I don't want to load win98 on my older machine...but I guess I could if I had to.

BTW...how do you do the "quote" thingy?

Win95 and win98 work well together on a network. In fact all the Microsoft products will network together right down to DOS 6.2
So you won't have a problem. If you were to do the DOS version I would tell you to upgrade..
Now as far as equipment no offense toshygemini3 but there has been quite a few problems with the linksys router as of late. Do a search on the forum about this. I think you can make your own opinion on it.

There are good cheap way's of networking your connection and you should look into all your options. Proxy can be faster than a router a lot of the time.
I ran proxy for well over a year before I broke down and got a router. (Just recently)

Heres a couple of sites on proxy
the proxy software from here is free http://www.analogx.com it doesent have a ton of features but it will work.
This site here has proxy software http://www.avirt.com thats real good that I used for the past year after trying all the rest. But it also has a good networking book in a PDF format that you can get for free on there download page.
Incidently I use a UGate-3200 router now. Just plug it in and go no real setup nessasary. If you have questions about this router I'll be more than happy to answer if I can or even the other info I gave.

Roadrunner charges $10.00 more for extra Ips. If you want to go that route. Or Buy a router and you will only need one. Depends on what you want to spend.

IN my area here, its 39.95 for one IP and 10 dollars more for another 2. Hope that helps answer your question.

thanks to everyone for responding. You can't seem to get any info from RR on the weekend.

dannjr: I may look you again if I decide to go the router-way(and have problems).
