View Full Version : Continuous Download Activity on Cable Modem
Just got a cable modem and noticed that according to an app I have running called DU Meter my modem / computer is continually downloading something at 1 (one) kbps even when my computer is idle (turned on but idle). This was not apparent when connected to a regular phone line using a 56k modem. I have checked and don't seem to have any app's running in the background that would be downloading something.
Any idea what's happening?

Most likely your system is sending "keep alives" to the modem telling it that you're still connected. This is not a big deal or a security risk. I'd bet the DU meter simply has no way of measuring a really small value, so just marks everything at a minimum value. Any traffic < 2 = 1, etc...

just to be sure you can get the best little personal firewall i have seen, its called zone alarm. Not only will it block incoming packets but outgoing as well and tell you the application that is trying to use your connection. You can get it at download.com just search for zonealarm in dwonloads. Also those nasty litte programs that connect to the internet and basically monitor your connection and where you go.I think most ppl call them spyware. You can get a free program that will remove those from www.grc.com.Its (http://www.grc.com.Its) called optout and it will scan your system and remove tha crap. All of you ought to get that one.I was shocked to see the amount of "spyware"that was on my computer.
yup, Optout is a great tool. highly recommend using it to scan for spyware on your pc. i thought my pc was clean, but it had some spyware in the registry and i was shocked. Zone Alarm is also a great firewall program and its free.
