Hello,
I am running Windows 98 SE with IE 5.5 and an At Home Cable connection through a Lynksys Router. Every time I start my browser is says detecting proxy settings for about 2-3 minutes before bringing up a page. I also have a Win 95 machine with IE 4.0 and it does not do this. All settings are identical. Please help!!

Thanks for the reply. I do not have to go through a proxy and it is on Automatic Detect, but it still does the same thing. Any other ideas?

That is a stupid thing in IE5.5 If you are using a proxy, then you have no choice but to watch it do this everytime you open up IE and browse the first web page. If you do not have a proxy server, then go into the tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings, and disable the automatically detect proxy. Hopefully this helps.
Uncheck "automatically detect proxy" as dray_heinz has pointed out. make sure all options in there are unchecked.

Thanks for your replies, except it still didn't work. I can check automatic or uncheck, but IE 5.5 always goes back to proxy http://proxy:8080 and takes 1-3 minutes. My other machine with IE 4.5 does not do this. Help please, this is very annoying.

Go in to HKey_Current_user/software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version. Change ProxyEnableValue to 0. Proxy Http1.1 Value to 0. This would be in Windows Registry. Back the Registry up frist before you do it. This should solve your problem. GoodLuck!

I did check my Registry and those entries already have values of 0. Could this be happening b/c I did have the At Home installed before I upgraded to IE 5.5? In the corner of my browser it still has the @ symbol instead of the E? Thanks for everybody who has tried to help so far.
Larster, try the old solution first - stop ahiehelp.dll from loading at boot by re-naming it to ahiehelp.old. That works for me and many others. Good luck

Yes if you used home software. I would uninstall home software if possible. There is a certen file that will stop the proxy in the software ,But I forget wich one it is. Look threw some of the back post and you will proubly find it. Or maybe some one else will be able to tell you. Hold on and wait and see. I think someone got the file I was telling you about. posted above me. GoodLuck!
