I have a small home network at my fraternity house... 5 each needing ethernet. Have a wireless netgear router... bought a linksys 8 port switch. I was under the impression that i could just connect cable modem to router and one cable from router to switch uplink, then connect 5 computers to the switch's ports. Is this incorrect? are netgear and linksys incompatible? why isnt it working? I'm not an idiot and i rechecked the cables. previously, we had the router only and everything was fine. when i plug the switch into the router, even wireless wont work, but i can still get to 192.168.1.1 and access the router. Extra info: security is WEP 128 bit and i changed the SSID.. dont think that would matter tho.

Thanks in advance

You might need to use a crossover cable, but that is an off chance with consumer gear these days. Still I would try it as you are mixing brands, and who knows if they both autosense properly.

Also some gear only allows uplinks between certain ports, so check the manuals of both devices and see which should be getting used. Generally though with typical consumer grade gear a patch cable between two switch ports should work just fine.

Did you double checkl the web admin page settings? It seems really odd that wireless would stop working like that.
