My speed on average is 325KB/sec when downloading. It starts out at 1200-700KB/sec then gradually decreases to 500KB/sec, to 400KB/sec, then to 325KB/sec, then to 200KB/sec, and eventually 160 or 150KB/sec. After then it either stays there or increases back up to 325KB/sec slowly and falls back down again after sometime, what causes this? On my old computer with ran on Windows 98SE, I had an average of 100KB/sec with the same router and ISP.
Another problem is during games when I'm connected to a server after about 20-25 seconds I seem to lag or disconnect for 5 seconds and then my game resumes, it happens every 20-25 seconds too. This causes the servers to kick me, for me to die, or just have a bad game experience. This did not happen on my old computer as much, only when I hosted games, now it happens when I join any servers on any game.
But, with streaming video, I don't have a problem with a constant streaming connection, atleast I haven't experienced any.
Also my ISP promises me 1.5Mb/sec through 3.0Mb/sec. So I'm maybe its providing me with the speeds I'm promised, but I doubt that. I am the one who uses the internet the most, only 2 computers are connected to the router. The other computer is very rarely on the internet. This statistics and information O provided above is what I've experienced without hosting anything or on a P2P program or doing anything else.
I have Windows XP Pro with SP2. I have a linksys router about a couple of years old or more.
I have done some TCP tweaks, PPPoE TCP tweak, changed the Half-Open TCP Connections from 10 to 500, and tried the TCP Optimizer. I have also run PC PitStop Optimizer. I haven't seen much notable improvement, if any.
It seems that my router has a setting to disconnect, refresh or something every 20-25 seconds. That's just my opinion thought, as all my connection drops, lag, and anything else happens EVERY 20-25 seconds.
And heres my TCP/IP info if you need it.
TCP options string = 020405ac0103030201010402
MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising your MTU value.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor of 4)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 63888
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4) <-- current value
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):
Your TCP Window limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 56 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)
