I have a wireless router at home, with a cable modem setup. What would be the best way to remotely connection to my home PC from work? I am assuming the windows remote desktop will not work since my home PC is behind the router/gateway.

Thanks in advance!

Quite a few methods........

Logmein.com ...a free remote connection software package (they have a pay for version too with more features).....no fiddling around with your routers firewall required.

GoToMyPC.com....similar to above...pay for, better performing..smoother.

Remote Desktop Connection...open/forward port 3389 on your router, pointing to the LAN IP of your workstation. Setup and run a DynDNS updater on your home PC...so you can always connect to your router from across the internet..regardless of when your IP changes. Requires Windows XP Professional at home.

PcAnywhere...if you don't have WinXPp...you can use this software, expensive. Open/forward port 5631/5632 on your router/firewall..to point to the LAN IP of your workstation. Would also use a DynDNS service.

VNC..many versions of this software, I prefer UltraVNC...similar to PcAnywhere...you'd set it up in similar fashion..uses different ports than PcAnywhere...5900. It's free. Would also use a DynDNS service.

Now for the last 3x methods...those are the default ports. You never want to leave your Administrator password blank, and for PcA and VNC...you want to use good usernames and passwords. Have your workstation always in locked mode, and lock workstation when disconnect.

I use Remote Desktop Connection the most...it by far...blows everything else out of the water when it comes to performance.
