Is my Cat5e cable run too long - 100 ft?...

Am trying to run a Cat5e cable from basement NetGear WGR614 to 2nd floor bedroom (wireless is NOT an option). Cat 5E run is about 100 ft - once connected, can't get a reliable connection. Pinging the router gets 1 sometimes 2 or often 0 hits per try.

We are experienced at crimp connections - have redone them and even run a new cable thinking 1st one has issues. Still no go and same pinging issues. Cable run is straight forward - away from noise sources, etc.

Is this wire run too long? Does router have some limitations on Cat5 runs? Really stumped here?

Max is 100 meters...a bit over 300 feet.

I'd look at what you're putting your run next to....running parallel to any AC lines, light ballasts, anything else that might case interference?

Any chance of getting pre-terminated?

Preterminated -- meaning with crimp connectors already fitted? I guess that's an option?

We've been pretty careful in the run -- goes down thru a cold air return duct and the run (as a trial) is just laid on the floor and over to the router. Wiring isn't by much of anything electrical? That's why I'm stumped?

Yah...you can purchase them that long.
$26 bucks right here...

Can find them cheaper elsewhere at cable places....

I'm just...wary...when it comes to end users terminating their own patch cords and data jacks...unless it's done by someone who's been certified and does it for a living. I've blown too many hours in the past troubleshooting networks..only to find out it was done by the end user.

Guys -thx for all the suggestions.

We solved the issue by putting a linksys switch just after our netgear router. Netgear was just not able to handle the distance. It surprised us too -- but solve the problem (go figure?).

Only thing that comes to mind is that the Netgear device is geared more for consumer use -- and not meant to drive longer Cat5 lines.
