I threw it on just to see if it'd work, switched nvidia 4200 with ati 9200.

Back on slack now.

All you had to do was edit the xf86.config and change "ati" to "vesa"

Fluxbox is evil I tried to get out of fluxbox to goto kde in slackware and reinstalled to get to KDE lol

Tony, do you use litestep for XP then if you like fluxbox?

Simple question: Why Etch, versus Sid? Unstable should have the newer programs over Testing, shouldn't it?

Yard-
no, I don't use litestep. I just use x-window-system & fluxbox. I don't use a desktop environment at all.

Paft-
Etch is the latest version of stable. Testing & unstable have the newest stuff though, but my systems are a few yrs old and etch has support for all the hardware I have. Plus etch (stable) uses security updates from Debian which is important for production based boxes. (one of my servers is opened to the wan so I can test php & mysql scripts & I want them secure prior to using them on a real site)

Sarge is still considered the stable version as of today. Sid is always unstable. Etch is considered to be stable by everyone else but Debian.

No. I use xppro for everyday use, deb is on my servers. i have 7 systems on a home lan; wife, 3 kids, my xp box, 2 deb servers (one server is lan only for my business db & web app I made & other is lan-wan for web site testing).

Sid, afaik, etch IS considered the current Stable release by Debian. Cancel that...I just looked at the deb site again and it says Sarge is latest stable release. I swear that about 4 months ago it said etch was the stable release. I believe they changed the site again.

They won't consider Etch stable untill December. They're bringing on a new project leader, maybe things will move a bit quicker for them.

Thanks, that spurred my memory a bit. I had installed sarge on my wan server and woody is on my lan server. For some reason I had forgot the name "sarge" completely! I now remember when I installed sarge because the mysql broke my php scripts and I had to redo some of my queries. That's why I "forgot sarge" cause I wanted the reliability-dependability of woody but needed the security aspects of certain sarge packages like mysql & php4. I still use apache 1.3 though on both boxes!

I may try etch, slackware is a bitch, but it seems to be the best for performance.

Are there any common linux benchmarks?
