Hi,
In short, my question is: is there anything that would cause you to lose tremendous amounts of DSL bandwidth when connecting to the Internet through a router versus connecting directly to the DSL modem?
In more detail, here is my problem:
I have recently upgraded from dial-up to DSL (BellSouth FastAccess), my Internet is suddenly blazing fast. Which is a good thing.
However, in the future I will have other computers sharing the connection, so I bought a router (Linksys WRT54G). I connected the modem to the router's uplink port and my computer to one of the router's main ports. After a few settings tweaks of the modem and the router, I got it to route Internet though.
I thought I was done, but then I realized my pages were loading much slower, especially when there were images or other media on the page. I decided to be all scientific about it and used one of those Internet bandwidth speed tests, comparing my computer when connected directly to the modem, versus my computer when connected through the router. The results:
Direct connection to modem: about 1 Mbps
Through router: about 100 kbps
I know routers add some overhead, but this is ridiculous! My speed has been cut by a factor of 10!
Does anyone know why this might happen? I'd greatly appreciate any help on this matter.
