Hi Speedguiders,
I have OOL, and they have begun advertising that OOL is now 50 percent faster, for no additional cost. On their website, they have a tool to check if your system supports this upgrade. My system prompted this message:

Your modem appears to be connected to your computer via a 10 baseT Ethernet port. A 100 baseT Ethernet connection is required to ensure maximum connection speeds. Please replace your Ethernet port if you want to achieve download speeds approaching the full 15Mbps offered by Optimum Online. Please consult your computer manufacturer's manual or Web site for additional information.

This is only a recommendation to achieve maximum connection speeds. Your Internet connection and other features will work with your current setup, but will not be able to approach Optimum Online's top speed of 15Mbps.

Now my question is this; I have a 10/100mps ethernet card. I tried setting it to 100 duplex, then to 100 half duplex, to automode but get the same response. Will a different ethernet card make a difference? I searched online but didn't see any that specifically advertised that 100 base T feature, most seem like the 10/100 like I have.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!:rotfl:

What modem do you have? The modem may be limited.

Or...are you plugged into a router...many routers have a 10meg WAN port.

no router connected.
And the modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB4200. I will try to search the specs online.
Thanks for the input!

I emailed OOL and they said to replace the modem. I upgraded to the Motorola 5100. Now all is well. Now to mull over adding that Optimum Boost package, up to 30 MPS ! But pricey.

Hey, just figured I'd give you a heads up on your problem. Your problem is not your network card. You should always keep it set to 100-Full Dup... But regardless, it's the back side of your Modem that is 10Mbps. That, you cannot change. I had an old SurfBoard 3100 and when I upgraded my COX ISP Account to 15 Mbps, I was only able to get like 6.7 - 6.8 TOPS! I had a router connected, Cox was say my router was slowing it down... so I lived with it because I knew they were lying... it was only a year later that I Plugged the modem directly into my laptop and saw the little bubble in the bottom right corner pop up... "You are now connected at 10.0 Mbps..."

CRAP!!! All this time, it's been because my modem is OLD! Modems were release back in the day not EVER thinking that 100 megabits would be needed... So they put a 10Mbps interface on the back.

In short, you need a new modem. I just got the SurfBoard 5150 and now I get a whopping 15.4 Mbps down!!! Cox actually allows 17Megabits to go through, but with that extra bandwidth for response, you get the 15. If your ISP is cool like that, you should get around 15 as well. If they do the whole BS where you're allowed 15 TOTAL, you'll probably only get around 13.5.

HOPE THIS HELPS! Circuit City always has atleast a $20 rebate on the motorola modems... You can get it for around $60.
