The salary ranges vary incredibly based on the location you're in, other "hands on/on the job" experience you have, and one of the biggest factors....who you land a job with, etc. I'm talking from maybe $25K low to $55K high...without having other certs.
It's a stepping stone. You also probably want to get good and familiar with server operating systems (such as Windows Server).
Depends on what particular field you're into also. I'm not into the 9-5 routine of having to report to an office, like being IT for some business. I took the approach of being independent, supporting networks for small to medium businesses as a living...any type of business out there...from several computers in a peer to peer network, to a dozen or two computers to a server, to 50 computers to several servers....and on up...that's the market I believe has a strong need for support...places that can't afford their own IT staff, so they outsource to a consultant! Myself and several other regulars on this forum do that...and it's pretty rewarding $$$ wise.
