View Full Version : FTP Speed Issues in upgrading to Cox's "Premier" package...

Okay...

Tonight I bit the bullet and upgraded from preferred [4 Mbit down, 512 Kbit up] to premier [9 Mbit down, 1 Mbit up] for $15 more.

My modem they said couldn't support it so I bought a new one from Best Buy, called up Cox, registered it, and I was back online in no time.

Here's my issue:

If I download any video from my website [www.g0at.com], for example, I get full, steady speed of .99 MB/s to 1.1 MB/s. GREAT!

But if I login to my website via FTP which I use to update my website and such and download the SAME EXACT VIDEO, I only get a FLUCTUATING download speed of around 350-650 KB/s. On the other hand, I can upload to the same FTP at my full 1 Mbit no problem.

Why's there an issue with the FTP deal?

Back when I had 4 Mbit down, and even before that and they had 3 Mbit down, I had NO ISSUES downloading 100% steadilly at FULL SPEED.

I also have the same download speed issue from other FTP sites that are 100 Mbit whereas before I upgraded I also had consistant 100% maxed 4 Mbit and 3 Mbit download speeds.

Is it the FTP Program (FlashFXP - registered) or is it something to do with the FTP port?

I've ran the Broadband Analyzer and everything's okay... I've ran the Broadband Optimizer that SpeedGuide.net offers, too [which only changed 1 thing] and it made no change.

Isn't this odd?

Tomorrow I will try another FTP application (even though I'd hate to find out it's the FTP app because I *love* FlashFXP and I have even paid to register it!).

Any ideas? This is sooooo strange !!!

Could be that your FTP program is capped at a slower speed somewhere in a setting? Might try removing it and reloading it see what happens first so it might default back to what your speeds are now... i'm shooting from the hip here cause I dont upload much. :D

Well I know there's something weird with the FTP program...

I used a differednt one and speeds were 95% and steadily 95% my 9 Mbit download speed throughout.

I had a problem similar to this before but don't remember how it was fixed...

Anyway I've tried every setting in the book to try and figure out why my preferred, familiar (used for 5+ years) FTP program FlashFXP just doesn't want to max me out on the same FTP servers.

Also what's weird - And the reasn I upgraded to this "Premium" package with Cox in the first place:

If I host a game on Xbox Live I can still only host 4-5 people. I tried it in 20 games last night and same. 6-8 and they all 999 ping out just like when I had 512 Kbit upload.

So I think it's quite obvious the problem goes beyond a simple FTP program issue. Afterall, as I've already said, from WWW links I download and upload full new 9 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up no problem.

Could my router have anything to do with it given the fact that I am seeing 9 Mbit and 1 Mbit in certain situations (I.E. on website downloads)??? I seriously doubt it but I'm shooting from the hip, too.

I've got a Cox guy coming out on Monday (and I'm a bit PC nerd so I know it's not my PC. My specs are just like youres, Sava in your signature - very close to top of the line. An amazing home-built high-spec PC). I had an issue where my Cox internet went out altogether about 6 months after I got it years ago and guess what - some "weak" (I'm quoting the Cox man) powered-up splitter got "fried by my internet connection" essentially. So maybe he can fix it.

If he can't - well, I'm calling up Cox ASAP and going back to "Preferred" and save $15.

spliters huh... what are your signals on your modem now? Power levels up and down etc..

The splitters are in the attic. They were from when we used Cox as a cable provider years ago. My modem plus directrly into it's own wall socket and nothing else in the house is plugged into Cox's wiring into my home.

This shouldn't be an issue anyway as other FTP programs give me full speed. Thanks for your help, though. :\
