View Full Version : How do I dedicate ram to my network card in Windows ME??

on the front page of this site there is a link to "System.ini Tweak" on the left hand side.
The tweak speaks of setting aside 4MB of ram to the network card.
It's a tweak Id like to try but don't see how to do it considering I'm running Windows ME, cause at the bottom the one step says to go to "Start > Run and type 'sysedit'" you can't do that in Min ME cause I don't believe there is suck a file to edit.
So is the tweak possibly in Win. ME?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out here.

yes the tweak is possible on WinME. You can either go and do a search for system.ini or you can get it directly at your windows directly (ex. C:\Windows).
However, it is not quite sure whether or not this tweak actually does anything at all. I personally believe it doesn't do anything good.

I tried the nic tweak, and it does work for me. It may not work for you; but it did work for me. I always get 80 times faster, and it's only peak time! Here's my connection speed, and it's only SuperBowl Sunday:
** Speed 4447(down)/620(up) kbps **
(At least 88 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.
Your download speed : 4447947 bps, or 4447 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 542.9 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 620475 bps, or 620 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!
I would get 88 to 100 times faster at 10pm until the next morning, then it's back to 80 to 90 times faster! I'm very happy with Roadrunner now, and thank to speedguide's nic tweak!

In ME click on Sys Information, when that comes up, click on tools, then click on Sys confuration Utility, when that comes up click on Sys ini, then you will see 386Enh, thats where it goes, good luck

Where do you live?
Your telling me your on RoadRunner and getting 620 kbps upload speed after you did the system.ini tweak?
I find that hard to believe but please tell me exactly what you did ok?
I added the line " Irq09=4096 " under the [386Enh] section in my system.ini file and nothing happened.
Remember I'm running Win Me here.
Did I do it right?
Yea, everything is right except the 0 in front of the 9 don't need to be there
I use ME too and I tried it and it did nothing for me, so maybe you might need a speed patch

ummmm... if it didnt work for you then how the hell do you know what I need and what works?
and if im up to trying .ini tweaks dont you think id have already tried the damn speed tweaks...
DUH!!
I was busy doing something else when I came back and saw your little remarks. Cute. You have no clue and I certainly am not going to tell you. If you think that that little Irq thing is going to make you feel like a fighter pilot, I have some waterfront property you might be interested in. The reason your slow is you did not do it right to begin with. Do you know how to spell reformat

I live in Topeka, Ks; two blocks from Topeka HS. I'm using a big RWIN setting, plus tried the NIC tweak, and it worked for me. You did it right, but you have to restart the computer for it to work.
I right click on My Computer, go to properties, Right click on computer, select properties, Find my NIC, and went to run. Type in sysedit, put in IRQ10=4096 under 386Enh, and I finally rebooted the computer. The tweak work for me, but may not work for others.
As for 620 Kbps, that's my upload speed no matter it's peak time or not. Also, I'm the only one in my neighborhood with a PC.

I thought that all Road Runner networks, nationwide, were capped at 2Mbits download and 300/384 KBits Upload? If they aren't. then TeenIAddict, is the first SG'r that I have seen with those kinds of speeds on the RR network.

Mercurick: Jeez, what kind of response was that to someone who actually took the time out to attempt to add something to help you with a question that YOU asked.
Your "Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out here." wouldn't just apply to those people that tell you what you want to hear does it?
O.K., the NIC tweak works. It also generates clean non-polluting power, comforts the aged and infirm, regrows hair, raises the dead, reunites the Beatles (Yes, ALL of them since Pete Best, John Lennon, and the REAL Paul McCartney would be resurrected!), and lets 28K ISA half-duplex modems download at T3 speeds and beyond!!!
I accept your thanks in advance with good graces and a curtsey...
Seriously though, I can't really tell you if the NIC tweak helps or not. I don't think anyone can since DL speeds are never the same since conditions vary so much/often. I leave it in my registry since it doesn't seem to cause any problems and I have enough RAM where 4MB less for the PC isn't going to bother my system anyway. TeenInternetAddict is the only person I've ever seen post that it appears to work and even then they weren't sure. So, yes it can be applied in WinME. Does it help at all? Maybe. Unfortunately, that's as accurate as we can get around here.
As for your "ummmm... if it didnt work for you then how the hell do you know what I need and what works? and if im up to trying .ini tweaks dont you think id have already tried the damn speed tweaks...
DUH!!" rant: I don't understand... You ask people whether or not the tweak is in WinME in your original post but never ask if it even works. Along with everyone else, I assumed you wanted to know if it even worked TOO. So, all you wanted was someone to answer "Yes, you can do that in WinME." and "Yes, you entered the IRQ entry OK."?
