View Full Version : @home says IE 5.5 is untested and could cause my slow speeds

Their tech support (2nd tier yet) suggested that I remove IE 5.0 and install IE 5.0.
Does anyone get the feeling that no one at @home knows what the hell they are talking about?

ive gotten that feeling from the start
I dont know about slow downs, but when I installed IE 5.5 my browser would lock up,so I went back to 5.01,and it has'nt locked up since.

Well, I have talked with the tech support about 83 million times in the past two years and they have never, EVER mentioned that before.
Sounds like they're searching for straws. So how exactly slow are you? Have you installed any of the cable tweaks here?

Works great on my computer. It actually loads pages faster than 5.01. I have Shaw@Home.

Hey BlueJetta,
Yep, I've tried most of the tweaks here and nothing works.
I'm using ispeed for windows to keep a history. I check in the morning, when I get home and while I am surfing. Apparently @home is capped at 145392 kb per sec. Since 1-11-01 I have attained that 7 times at different times of day.
Right now I tested at 22,368 kbps which is pretty good for me this past week it's been below 10,000 kbps and just broke 2,000 one day. On many days my 56K modem is faster (today it was earlier).
Sometimes my signal just fades. I have watched the modem light go dark. Sometimes its off when I sit down. I then unplug the modem, reconnect, still no cable. Then I unscrew the cable, put it back on, and I have cable (weak)
Today a tech came out and replaced the motorola modem with a new toshiba (3d modem) I told the guy it was not going to make any difference and showed him my history. This dude could care less. Later I complained and found out he was a contract worker.
It's not an internal problem. Everything has been replaced inside, amplifiers, tweaks. I know there is nothing wrong with my system. I have a weak signal.
i had ie5.5 removed for sum weird reason it was causing some sort of lag in gaming i dont understand exactly how or why but when i removed ie5 my game lag disapeared
i never had poor download speeds just weirdo lag

I think you have some numbers skewed there. We'd all give a body part for 22,368kbps!!!!
You are referring to bits per second and not kilo bits. Read this informative Guide to Bits and Bytes (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/bandwidth.shtml).
On your other problem of losing connection, it sounds like you have an extremely poor physical cable connection.
Is your house old? Is the cable drop (from the street to your house) old? They may need to run a new drop and possible re-wire your house if that's the case.
They've already doen all the easy stuff by replacing the hardware in your computer, which obviously is not the problem. Good luck and keep on those guys!! You have to keep calling them or they will forget you, and be sure to get a refund for ANY time that the service was not up to the standards that you paid for. They are required by law to refund you!

I use 5.5 on both my machines using @Home.
W/ME (5.5 comes with it) and W2K Pro. I upgraded to 5.5 on it.
Both work fine, I dont see any difference between 5.0 and 5.5 on my system.

Are you using @home software, including its proxy?
That's really what the technie was in all likelihood referring to. If so, he meant to say that @home's software hasn't been tested on IE5.5. I know: I was told that when I originally went with @home and mistakenly installed the software itself. I had IE5.5. That doesn't mean IE5.5 won't work with it, but if you are having problems with speed, then IE5.5 isn't in all probability the problem.
Three suggestions, whether or not you're running the software:
1) If the software's on, take it off in the add/remove of the control .panel, ...including the proxy (there's a thread here somewhere which will enable you to get rid of the registry entry that will remain and continue to load up the proxy all the same: it requires you to go to start-run-command and enter a simple one line command.) Then go into IE5.5, internet option, connection, LAN settings and disable everything there.
2) If IE5.5 doesn't work, then remove it. Just go to the add/remove panel and it comes off lickety-split. Download 5.1 if removing 5.5 doesn't leave that on your system. With a cable, downloading is a snap.
You're likely to find 5.1 loads pages faster no matter what, and is more stable than 5.5 anyway.
3) If that's not the problem, then follow the previous suggestions about the cable line and hookup. Any wear and tear in the cable will have disastrous results.
4) Come to think of it, one more suggestion if the first three don't work. Change your NIC. Try a high quality one like 3com or linksys or netgear. It can make a big difference too.
Hope some of these suggestions help.

BlueJetta,
Ooops, those figures S/B avg throughput: 22.4 and 145.4 kbps, Kbytes transferred: 290785. Using ispeed software.
This morning I got:
10.52 kbps using ispeed.
81,600 kbps, 10,000 Kbytes/sec with Cox speedtest.
619.1 kbps, 75.9 kb/sec with MSN znet.com
2420 kbps (down) , 268 kbps (up) w/DSLreports.
They put in new underground cable from the steet to my house. I assume the cabling that runs from the junction box to the 4 cable outlets is as old as the house,20 years. New cable from cable outlets to final destinations.
The thing is My TV reception improved dramatically after they replace the main drop.
I ALWAYS get 280.1 kbps with the Roadrunner setup I have in my school classroom. It's awesome.

Gordon1,
Thanks for the suggestions.
I did remove all traces of the @home software v2.01 that they guy put in. I found there was nothing in it I need and I seemed to have 2 IE browsers..
I did replace the Farallon? (never heard of it) Nic card they put in with a 3com 10/100 3C905B-tx card. No difference.
I do have a new linksys 10/100 nic that I have not tried yet. Nothing to lose.
I can remove IE 5.5 no problem, but with no browser how am I gonna download IE 5.1? Maybe I can download that first from microsoft?

That MSN report is not that great, but it could be a busy server or yet another DOS attack. The DSLR report is not horrible for cable. I used to get those speeds all the time until they made some changes and now I much faster, but you should check into downloading NetStatLive from here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm
It's a stand alone, very small, utility that monitors your speed live, as you're using it so you can see exactly what is going on at all times.

Hey I never heard of Farallon before I worked for RR, but it seems that windows has native drivers for it in nearly every version, (I also hear they are what nics they put in older macs).

Friday - 1:55 PM ET Though it is not known why specifically at this point, except that MS wishes to work on the service pack for the software, the Redmond Giant pulled the download for Internet Explorer version 5.5. Officials told ZDNet that the service pack will neither add new features or update any software bugs, but that they realized they neede to work on specific areas of the program. They also told ZDNet that the removal has nothing to do with recent Web site outages at the company. Stay tuned as more information comes in.
