Current setup. Belkin Pre-N Mimo Wireless router. One computer plugged in to the router. 2 other computers working wirelessly in the same room as that router. 2 other computers working wirelessly in a room approximately 90 feet away, not line of sight, through very thick walls and other wireless networks within the same building.

The wired computer is fine with the router. The 2 working wirelessly in the same room use a particularly complex software program running off the main wired computer. The connection when using this program is often lost and although regained again very quickly, it kicks the user out of the program. The PCs then usually need to be restarted to gain access once again.

The 2 computers working farthest from the router/main wired pc, have very low wireless strength and often drop the connection completely.

I attempted to use another of the same router to boost the signal or use as an access point. First I configured the other router to be used as an access point, then gave it the same SSID and wireless chanel as the main router. In wireless access mode the DHCP is automatically turned off. I then configured each of the two farthest computers with their own IP address and input the gateway address of the main router. I then plugged in one of the 2 computers into the now Access Point and was able to get on the internet, once this was done I was able to unplug the cable and still be able to access the internet. I did the same with the other computer with the same result. The odd thing is that when the PCs were restarted neither of them were able to access the shared folders (already setup and working on wireless) on the main wired PC attached to the router in the other room nor access the internet. They were only able to gain access again to the shared folders and internet access once I had switched off the Access Point and then reconfigured them to Automatically receive an IP address etc.

Is this scenario a non starter, is there something I am missing or am I going to have to hard wire the lot!

I would very much appreciate an answer to this puzzle as I am now at a loss as to what would get it all working!

Thank you for your time and patience in reading this long winded explanation.

If you want to use the second Belkin as an access point, you'll want to uplink it to the main router via the LAN ports of each (crossover depending on how you're wiring it..patch panel or not).

Try a different channel also...might work better. Especially since you mention many other WLANs in the building. I've noticed this can make a big help. Can scan the other networks with Netstumbler..see what channels they're using, and avoid those channels.

What wireless NICs are you using?

I've had absolutely incredible results with the Belkin Pre-N routers, and the Linksys SRX routers (same wireless chipset on both..the best one there is...Airgo True MIMO)

I've setup multiple Pre-N units in the same building/WLAN also, same SSID, I had both set in access point mode, disabled DHCP on both (since they already had a main router in place)...had them in opposite diagonal corners/floors of the house. Huge...huge house, on the border of an exclusive golf course...I was out on the green with my laptop..walking across a hill...quite far away and still posting on the forum here. Can do same channel, or different channels on each..try both, different situations..different setups can perform differently.

I have not attempted to run a very bandwidth hungry, connection-drop intolerant software across a WLAN before. Is this VFox Pro or Access based or something? As much as I love MIMO for what it's done to wireless...wireless is still wireless, there is the occasional "burp or hiccup"...however brief where most apps don't mind it, some such as yours might just be too intolerant of network breaks.

Anyways, different channels...give that a go.

Many thanks YeOldStoneCat. I will try what you say re the chanels but I fear that the problem may well be with our hungry accounting/tax software program!

Again, thank you for taking the time to read and offer possible solutions and advice.

Accounting package eh? Which one?
Which wireless NICs?
