is there anyway around packet shaping?

Hi I recently learned that my college uses packet/traffic shaping. I am a complete network n00b, but I've come to understand this is why I'm getting in excess of 7000ms (!) pings while gaming.

Is there anyway around packet shaping or are my gaming days at college over? :confused:
