im having some problems,my downloads are allright i supose,
(between 100 and 300KBps),
but my uploads are crap,
(15KBps max uploading to anyone, no matter where they are )
i tweaked my computer as best i can, and im wondering if theres anything else i can do.
this is my specs for my computer,
(custom built by me)
amd athlon 1ghz 384mb sdram pc133
asus a7v kt133a motherboard
cdrw & cdrom
geforce 2 gts/pro
linksys ethernet card (ISP provided)
Surfboard 4100 cable modem
i (HAD) a 3com cable modem, but they wanted to trade it out. i had the same probs with both modems.
** AND i seem to be having the same problems with speeds on another 2 computers, and my step dad is having similar problems on his, and hes on the same city block
as i am.
the link to my tweak test is below, and this is AFTER about 3 hours of messing around with my stuff.
My tweak test results. (http://monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/block:a9fa85?service=cable&speed=756&os=winME&via=normal)
anyway, any help will be helpfull.
thanks :)
Hi,
If you are on ADSL, then don't worry about the much slower upload speed. The A in ADSL stands for Asynchronous. That means that your upload speed is capped much lower than your top download speed. For example, my ADSL is capped at 1184 kbits downstream/160 kbits upstream.
Unless your in tight with your local phone company techs....there isin't anything that you can do about this.
Hope this is helpfull :)

i guess i forgot to say,
its charter pipeline,
( gold package) 756 down/132 up
but it rarely gets that fast...
downloading a file, my ave speed is between
id say, 50 to 200, with like bursts to 300KBps or so.
uplaoding i have never uploaded faster than 15KBps. at all
hmmm....I'm not too familiar with a "charter pipeline" type connection. Sorry. Maybe check with your ISP if the upload is capped.
Are you leasing a line?
Do you mean 132kbps or 132Kbytes/sec?
132kbits/sec. divided by 8 = 16.5kbytes/sec. so you are uploading almost at top speed when you upload at 15kbytes/sec.
Your ISP gives you the line speed in kbits. Whenever you upload a file from your computer, the transfer rate is most often indicated in kbytes.

...Sh*t i did it again,
charter pipeline is Cable.
...i cant believe i forgot to mention it was cable, twice.
i gave up trying to keep track of it in bytes or bits, when i say i upload @ 15KBps i do mean bytes , BUT other people in the same town upload twice that.
my download speed is good.
im getting high pings, and low upload speeds... thats my problem.
and i may be wrong, i think im suposed to get, 756 down 256 (about) up i forget.
... i hope i got everything this time.

If your cable connection is anything like the service we have in Montreal. The bandwith is shared. Everyone in your area is sharing the same connection line so the more people in your local subnet that have a cable connection and are using it at the same time the less bandwith there is to go around for everyone.
That's why it can be faster for some people that are connected on a different subnet. That's why I think you'll have a high ping rate in ms but the bandwith to maintain a high upload speed just isin't available.
 But don't quote me on this I'm just a DSL tech. ;)

ok, so in theory, could i connect through, say a diferent node, subnet, gateway?
(or whatever the correct one/terminoligy/name is)
...

Well no.....unless you move to another location where nobody else has cable internet yet :(
The subnet is really just the cable and all the computers or nodes that are attached to it. Because the access on cable is shared, everyone in the same area is on the same subnet or the same cable line. To change to another subnet, you would need to move on to another cable line.

Your speeds are optimal. 16KB/sec = 128kbps.

yea, i know high pings arent good, i play alot of unreal tournament and some quake 2 and 3... like i said, my ping times are bad,
alot of times i ping around 1500 , ... which wouldnt be too bad, if i were playing on a server in china... but i connect to servers , less than 3 states away.
and to the comment from halflifer, no there not optimal, if they were, my isp would tell me to shut up. THEY told me i should be getting higher upload speeds. ( between 20 and 40KBps and are trying to help me raise them .
other people in this town, with the same company, get two to three times higher speeds than i do.
( so if mine is optimal they are getting twice as much as there suposed to)
and like i thought, im suposed to have (about) 800 down and 250 up so , yea im getting cornholed.
the good news for me, is my isp wants to replace the wires on the out side of the house. so ill have a totaly new line, from the pole, to the comp. ( seperate ) from the line to the TV. 'so they claim'
Sounds like they might be giving you access to a brand new subnet (if that's possible). If the one you are on right now is overcrowded....then that is the only option your ISP has left to do.....
LAY DOWN SOME MORE CABLES!!!
Oh by the way....A high ping (in miliseconds)IS NOT A GOOD THING. The ping result is basically just the time it took for a data packet to travel from your computer to the host and then back again.
Of course, depending on who you are pinging...the time will vary enourmously. If you ping your ISP's web site URL... You should get a good ping. But if you Ping a site hosted in China....Well...it might take just a few hundred miliseconds longer to get there.
Nough said :D
