Forgive the intrusion with what will probably be an easy fix: BEFSR41 router, Earthlink DSL, Win 98. All connections good, can bring up router settings on PC, modem to router connection good (Link lights are lit).

Anyway, after following instructions and setting router for PPPOE, I get error from the router that it can't resolve the PPPOE connection.

I have played around with a lot of the setting on both the router and my Earthlink connection profile, to no avail. I'm guessing I've missed a simple step somewhere.

Did you add your DNS IP addy's to the router. I have to on my Ugate to get it to go also the domain has to be set its either of these earthlink.net or mindspring.net. plus the you need the server your tunneling to which in your case maybe only earthlink and not mindspring. Try them setting if you havent all ready

Going on over 35 installs of Linksys routers, I can say that based on my experience, 2 things have caused that on the 6 or so times that I've come across that error.

1) I used to see it more often a year ago when Linksys firmware was still maturing, such as prior to 1.35. It would be back with 1.28, 1.30, etc, and usually upgrading the firmware to the latest version fixed the problem. I've yet to see 1.35 fail with any ISPs PPPoE logon. Current official version is 1.37. Don't worry about that beta firmware, if 1.37 doesn't do it, the router isn't your problem. Linksys has a very easy firmware upgrade method. You can just use your dial up to fetch the firmware if you're not 1.37.

There was one case on a DSL install that acted up on me, the router couldn't log on, so I tried not using PPPoE, just set it to obtain IP like a cable modem setup, it finally got a lease, I then changed it back to PPPoE everything on auto and it was fine.

2)Try your computer stand alone, if this is a brand new install, I've seen it be your line was not setup correctly. Trying your computer stand alone direct to the modem using the PPPoE software you ISP sends you will rule out the router. If the computer won't log on if it's setup properly, then it's your line, call your ISP and have them send out the lineguy again. If your computer logs on fine, then you have to go back and wrestle with the router. Make sure you un-install the PPPoE software on your computer when you go back to using the router, it conflicts with the routers native PPPoE.
