It's been a long time since an updated and official version release has been made; I have assumed it updates with new versions and definitions via the auto-update feature, but I've seen no 5.xx release update since 5.5.

Any word?

Sygate was bought by Symantec...... I assume it will now turn into a bloated POS.

Things probably on hold for a while as Symantec incorporates their technology...Symantec will be dropping their firewall technology and utilizing Sygates technology in future Symantec firewalls. First starting in enterprise appliances, then working into the consumer products. Segway happening in probably 1-2 years last I read.

Back in "the day" of software firewalls.. I used to use At-Guard Software firewall.. it was a nice firewall... until
Symantec bought out At-Guard (@t-Guard) and used it in "thier own" Symantec Firewall product..

Now they are going to take out sygate..
I've been using Sygate Personal Firewall for a long time now.. it's too bad that it too, will get ruined by Symantec Or from what I see in Burke's post above, terminated :(

Yeah from what I've read, no more updates or development of Sygate..no more patches, etc.

Symantec released a statement: "Important Notice: Effective November 30th, 2005 all Sygate personal firewall products will be discontinued. This does not affect Sygate's Enterprise firewall and endpoint compliance products, which will still be updated and supported."

You'll be seeing it pulled from download sites over time.

Tiny firewall was another great freebie....a lightweight one, always did well in ratings. However... Computer Associates purchased them this past summer. Sooooo....the future of it is also in question, may follow the path that Sygate did..and be pulled, no longer updated or licensed for free.

Want to try out a neat, VERY light weight firewall? Free too?

Have you used this YOSC? It looks promising.

Yeah been running it on my Thinkypad for a while now...just to fiddle with it. Techie people will love it, the average home end user.....hard to say. It doesn't nag you with stuff, no "easy wizards"...it's a rule based firewall.

Seems good.. so far.... interesting, I put my main computer in my router's "DMZ" and I tried the port scan over at GRC (Zone Alarm Site) Says.. that "port zero" is in a closed state, and everything else is stealth. I'm still checking things out in the program.

ghostwall is only good for inbound protection but at least it works for xp64. Wish sygate was still be supported and if they had a version for xp64 I would buy it in a sec.:(

Yeah..but that's all I'm concerned about..inbound protection. I use it on my smaller laptop that's running 2K. Had it on my XP rig..but in all honesty, the XPsp2 firewall does all that I require...my last XP rebuild I didn't put Ghostwall back on it.

There's always a few other freebies for you to try...amongst them.. Netveda, Jetico, Comodo...

Tucows still has free version of Sygate available for download. Is this a good site to download from? I am worried about trojans etc coming from downloading from an untrusted site.

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/Actually I already have Sygate 5.5 running on my PC. Tucows had version 5.6 and that is why I was curious.

Is Comodo much better than Sygate? I used to use ZoneAlarm 6 years ago before I switched to Sygate. Unlike ZA Sygate has been very well behaved and leaves behind a very tiny footprint and has been very robust so far. How does Comodo compare with Sygate?

BTW YOSC, I have a Nexland ISB SOHO router firewall and a couple of days ago someone had somehow gotten through this NAT router and tried to access my PC and my wife's laptop. Sygate on my PC blocked them and McAfee firewall on my wife's PC also blocked them. How is it possible for these wannabe hackers to get into my Nexland router and try to get on to the machines in my network? I thought hardware firewalls were pretty secure, especially Nexland.

--- Edited to add:

Hmmmm...just tried the comodo leaktests. Sygate failed ALL of them! :(

I don't believe Sygate is updated anymore...which, IMO, updates are important.

Comodo is quite light, and easy to use.

You had to bring someone in past the router. NAT is NAT..no matter what brand router it is. Unless you specifically open/forward ports, or DMZ a computer, it's not available on the public side.

Or you left the web admin with a default password, and enabled remote admin access...and someone logged into your router...and opened/forwarded ports or DMZ'd a computer..guessing the first IP handed out by DHCP (pretty easy to guess)

You were right. I had not set my web admin password after I had flashed the firmware on my router a few months ago. I have set it now but the attacks are continuing even after that. Any suggestions on what steps I can take? Thanks in advance.

By the way, I have uninstalled Sygate and installed Comodo. Browsing speed with comodo is a little slower than with Sygate but I can live with it.

What attacks? From where? If outside..who cares. Anything being picked up on the inside?

What attacks? From where? If outside..who cares. Anything being picked up on the inside?Only from outside. I frequently get messages that say some IP address has been blocked from getting into my PC. It just worries me that people are able to log onto my NAT firewall and try to connect to my PC even though I have set my web admin password on the router...

From inside nothing happens, thank goodness. I occasionally get a message when I shut down the PC that windows is trying to kill a app called sw.exe ( a google search tells me that it is some kind of spyware). But it never shows up on my task manager, nor do I find the file anywhere on my hard drive. But this program never seems to have tried to connect outside my PC. So I guess I am cool as far as unauthorized connections to the outside world from inside my PC is concerned.

Thank you for suggesting comodo. I think it is pretty cool. :thumb:

If your NAT is shut (no port forwarding, no DMZ)..they're not contacting your PC from outside through the NAT. It's most likely something you picked up....that's already on your PC..as you notice with that warning about sw.exe.

I'd be scouring the computer with in depth scans with several good antivirus and anti spyware applications.

I'd be scouring the computer with in depth scans with several good antivirus and anti spyware applications.I scanned the PC with Kaspersky, SpyBOT & AD-Aware. Nothing was found. Does this mean my PC is secure? Don't know. I did a file search for sw.exe on my HD. Did not find that either.

By the way, comodo is proving to be too difficult to learn and use. With Sygate, accessing the HD of other PCs on my LAN was a breeze, whereas with comodo, I am banging my head against the wall to figure out how to do this. Doing the "Add trusted zone/network" does not work. I am going back to Sygate now with the disadvantage that when I uninstalled it, I lost all the signature updates I had stored on my PC and there is no way to get them back. Also with comodo, Windows takes more time to start up.

Hi everyone. I have tried Comodo recently, and even though I liked it I had to remove it because it caused a lot of BSODs in my (brand new) computer... and I was not the only one, lots of people in their forums seem to be experiencing the same thing with their latest versions and they provide no solution for it.
I was thinking of trying Sygate cause I heard good things about it, though I donīt quite like the fact that there would be no updates or support. How does it get along with P2P programs (namely BitComet, eMule and Limewire)? If itīs not very "compatible" with P2P programs, what other firewalls do you recommend (free or otherwise)? I am currently using ZonaAlarm Pro. Thanks in advance.
