I thought this was posted, but I can't seem to find it. (I want to say JCOS wanted to do this.)
Anyway, I am wanting to convert some DVD's to AVI or MPG to be able to carry them on my laptop when I travel. I ripped a DVD to the laptop, but it is in the native DVD files and I'd like one nice, clean file to play.
Anyone know of a free or common (Roxio, etc) program that will do this conversion?

This is for Xvid encoding. I use it to rip dvds to avi so I can watch on my laptop without using the optical drive (which burns more juice)

I see a LOT of programs on the download page. Do you use the DVD2SVCD?
You da man, Cyber!!
:)
edit: After a little :rtfm:, I see that they are different packs that I need to install/setup. I'll have to get this going when I get home.
Thanks!

Yep - the two links at the top are the ones you want to install.
That page tells you how to set all the component proggies up so it becomes push-button. Only need to do the config once. GK is basically a wrapper for several apps you would otherwise run in series.

i like to use AutoGordianKnot, works great.

I took a look at AGK - that's pretty slick.
MM - give that a go and let me know how it works for you. Seems much more simple to install/config - be interested in hearing on usability.

I installed that one you gave me, Cyber. Man, that was a bit complicated. A lot of the phrasology that was used wasn't jiving for me. So, I went back into the tutorials on the site and saw the AutoGK. I am doing one right now thru that.
Will report back with results. It was VERY easy to get started.
:)
Thanks, guys!!

Well, after playing with this all evening, I can say that I'll just stick with playing them from the original files and then deleting them whem I get home. Encoding them from DVD to AVI (or anything else) takes forEVER!!
I don't know if it's because I only have a 2.4GHz P4, 1GB PC2700 RAM and other equipment that is 3.5 years old, but it takes hours and hours to do a 30 minute clip (4 comedians, 30 minutes each).
Screw that.
Thanks for the info though, guys. Looks like either I need better hardware, more patience or better software to make me happy.
:)
AutoGK, and many other programs of that sort, allow you to create a batch list of files to convert. Simply select a few of your movies you'd like to compress, hit the start button, and go to sleep. When you wake up, they'll be waiting for you.

This is true and what I resorted to. However, I just wish there was a better way with all the technology out there.
Ah well. Can't beat the price.

My understanding is it has to do with the difference in formats - if you check out the docs from the orig GK package, you can see how many different steps must be performed - most of them in series (not parallel) so even SMP doesn't really help much. Disabling HT can help a lot for the serial tasks as you get your 'whole' cpu back.

No HT or DualCore here. :)
I am working on one DVD now that looks to be 49% done after 2 hours and 35 minutes.
I may just give up. LOL

Yes it was me that posted in here around Mid Sept. 2004. Good memory dude.

Did you ever find a good solution to taking DVD to AVI/MPEG?
I let the AutoGK sit yesterday evening for almost 6 hours. After it was done, when you get about 40 minutes in, the audio is ALL messed up!!
Thoughts??

Thoughts??I used DVD Decypter and DVD Shrink. Worked perfectly...small, easy and nothing but point and click. On my XPS P4 3.4 ghz, 2 gig ram it took 25 minutes to complete a DVD backup from start to finish.
If you plan on backing up a bunch of DVD's plan on purchasing a large capacity external drive. ;)

I have a 250GB external HDD that would be great for long biz trips.
When you do DVD Shrink, what format do you have it in when it's done?

The same vob+ structure that you have with a regulary-ly ripped dvd.
Try dvd2svcd - that's mpg2 as I recall. Would be a single file under a gig. Realize that it will take much longer than ripping.

Well you can put it in ISO and use Daemon Tools to mount the image. It'll work just like a CD/DVD rom. BTW JCOS you don't need to use DVD decrypter. Shrink will Decrypt, Encode, and Burn or put it into an ISO for backup purposes.
